[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ]

Today we saw 8yo ZIPPING (Danehill - Super Scene) make history by winning his third consecutive Sandown Classic (2400 m).

Just two weeks ago, he was lying on the Flemington turf trapped under the barrier stalls at the start of the Mackinnon Stakes.  This was to have been his last run prior to his fourth tilt at the Melbourne Cup.  With the field falling away, and following a solid 3rd in the Cox Plate, Zipping was given a second-to-none chance of taking out the 2-miler.  He'd run 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007 and 9th in 2008.

It's no secret that I'm an unabashed fan of Zipping.  I first put him up in the headlines when I saw him run 3rd of 16 in a Wednesday handicap at Sandown in March 2006.  My comment on the "old" forum was "it wasn't Nikolic's fault, but the horse should have won clearly."  I've followed Zipping closely since then.  I've not backed him many times, but when I have backed him I can't recall him ever letting me down.

Zipping has now won close to $3 mill.  He's had 39 starts for 13 wins, 2 seconds and 7 thirds.

His low number of starts (for an 8yo) can be attributed to his many minor set-backs, plus the fact that his owner has aimed him at the Spring Carnival in recent years.

Notwithstanding a record that can be matched by few other Australian racehorses, Zipping has his "knockers" - you know, the narks who get no joy seeing someone or something succeed.  Perhaps it's because of their dislike of the Williams style, or maybe they themselves are failures, or maybe it's because Zipping has a unique style of racing and doesn't win every start.

I don't understand the "knocks" for Zipping.

Here's a thread where you can record your views on Zipping and register as a fully-fledged knocker.

UPDATE 15.11.10

46 starts for 16 wins 3 seconds and 7 thirds.

Group 1 wins: 2010 Australian Cup (8yo), 2010 Turnbull Stakes (9yo)

Yes--I have been a knocker but I give credit to DD and others for sticking on--the MC effort last year was very good.

I just thought raced too long--but each to there own.

Hail--a very good horse--and I am sure DD has shed a tear--and there is nothing wrong with that.

Nice sentiments - put in a carbon copy for me  Thumb Up   Thumb Up

Here's hoping they find a suitable race to name after him.

Hopefully they create a NEW race over 2800m run at WFA for 4yos+ and call it the Zipping Stakes.

Well, all good things come to an end.

I doubt anyone on here will see a horse who races as long as he has done, with the problems he's endured, and who wins the string of top races as he's done.  Only bad luck prevented him winning a Melbourne Cup - not that we should measure a horse's ability on a Melbourne Cup win.

Definitely worthy of a the equine VC for courage under fire. thumbsup

Has been nice knowing ya mate.  Hope you enjoy a grassy paddock in ya retirement.

    bye

Great to see DD,

A few of us were worried that you have taken this loss at a bit too low.

Obviously the grief is there --and you have handled that well---a trooper through & through    Thumb Up

A replacement needed ???  Can I suggest Black & Bent--you will get heaps of places by this 10yo in the next few years....straights & hurdles.....
