[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ]

Today we saw 8yo ZIPPING (Danehill - Super Scene) make history by winning his third consecutive Sandown Classic (2400 m).

Just two weeks ago, he was lying on the Flemington turf trapped under the barrier stalls at the start of the Mackinnon Stakes.  This was to have been his last run prior to his fourth tilt at the Melbourne Cup.  With the field falling away, and following a solid 3rd in the Cox Plate, Zipping was given a second-to-none chance of taking out the 2-miler.  He'd run 4th in 2006, 4th in 2007 and 9th in 2008.

It's no secret that I'm an unabashed fan of Zipping.  I first put him up in the headlines when I saw him run 3rd of 16 in a Wednesday handicap at Sandown in March 2006.  My comment on the "old" forum was "it wasn't Nikolic's fault, but the horse should have won clearly."  I've followed Zipping closely since then.  I've not backed him many times, but when I have backed him I can't recall him ever letting me down.

Zipping has now won close to $3 mill.  He's had 39 starts for 13 wins, 2 seconds and 7 thirds.

His low number of starts (for an 8yo) can be attributed to his many minor set-backs, plus the fact that his owner has aimed him at the Spring Carnival in recent years.

Notwithstanding a record that can be matched by few other Australian racehorses, Zipping has his "knockers" - you know, the narks who get no joy seeing someone or something succeed.  Perhaps it's because of their dislike of the Williams style, or maybe they themselves are failures, or maybe it's because Zipping has a unique style of racing and doesn't win every start.

I don't understand the "knocks" for Zipping.

Here's a thread where you can record your views on Zipping and register as a fully-fledged knocker.

UPDATE 15.11.10

46 starts for 16 wins 3 seconds and 7 thirds.

Great over 2400, would have been great in a CC, but not quite a 2 miler, simple as that mate.  biggrin

Perhaps it's because of their dislike of the Williams style

Very diplomatically put, but I would say this is a big reason that a lot of people give the impression that they dislike the horse DD.

I had mine on him today.

The treble of Sandown Cup wins is quite an achievement. But as I'm sure when the horse population talks amongst themselves, they have an old saying "you can't choose your owner".

Shame they haven't travelled with him a bit more.

Zipping would have been a good 3-4 lengths superior if he had not been gelded.

I'm a knocker.

He is a 2nd stringer, often looks great in the lead ups, but never been close in a 'grand final'.

Good horse, and I've no problem backing him, but just not good enough for the big races.

I don't think gelding him has had any negative effect on his career either?!?! what

Just watched the race on TODAYS RACING TONIGHT and by gee by gingo by crikey M.Rodd would have been crucified had Zipping not got up.

When it comes off its great but fair dinkum that was an interesting ride.

Good to see Master O'Reilly ridden properly.

I'm not a knocker, but I'm always reluctant to back anything of Lloyd's unless it's in its prep's main goal.

Just a question...have many horses run in 3 or 4 Melbourne Cups? chin

Skybeau had a few tries, and I notice his namesake is on line.

Shadow King holds the record for most attempts, which was 6.

Followed by Skybeau who ran in 5 MC's and 5 AC's.
