I do not know whether it is appropriate to post this so soon after the passing of Jack Denham but, from my memory I recalled there was a story about his brother Mick. Sure enough, I was able to locate the following on the Just Racing website...

From the 1930’s the AJC – and other authorities, were aware of “speed balls” being used on Australian racetracks, but had no detection methods available to them. “Speed balls” included mixtures of strychnine, heroin, caffeine and cocaine. The AJC appointed of all people, a woman, to be head of their new department. It was extraordinary that women had almost no other rights on racetracks – or in society in general – yet Jean Kimble, a University of Sydney graduate and analytical chemist was chosen. Kimble’s work started slowly, with just two winners at each AJC meeting being tested. History doesn’t record whether she picked the horses, or whether the committee told her which two to sample – but the latter seems a more likely scenario!! In any event just swabbing two winners would be seen by the public to create “integrity” issues, even back in 1947 and within a year or so, all AJC city winners were being swabbed.

It didn’t take Jean Kimble long to come up with Australia’s first “positive” swab on May 28th 1948. That award went to Randwick winner Frontal Attack which tested “positive to caffeine”. The horse’s trainer Mick Denham was disqualified for life.

Trainer Mick Denham’s “life” disqualification lasted only four years. In May of 1951, Denham’s license was reinstated after the Trainers Association had continually “lobbied” the AJC committee. Mick Denham was a brother of current trainer Jack Denham, who was inducted into the racing Hall of Fame in 2005.

Filante was a favourite of mine, a couple of races before the Cox Plate I went down to the horse stalls to have a look at him, he was standing dead still in his stall not moving a muscle when he slowly went to lift his head, the strapper hanging onto the tie-up lead rope jerked on it immediately - horse put his head back down and went to sleep.

Had a look at Might and Power in the stalls before his Melb Cup, same thing, Jack and his son standing there ensuring the horse did not move a muscle. The old Flemington stalls were dark, it all had a bit of mystique about it.

She seemed to be around forever, but only had 25 starts.

I was at Warwick Farm the day With Me won the Oakleigh Plate from the outside gate at 25/1 with Miracle Mal on board. Mal burnt across from the outside gate and he kept going

Leave it at that.
