magic for CoastDaniel Meers   |  December 19th, 2009

THE future of the Magic Millions raceday has all but been assured after the Brisbane Racing Club last night formally told the Gold Coast Turf Club they do not want to steal the meeting.

In a stunning revelation, The Gold Coast Bulletin can reveal the board of the BRC, who govern John Singleton's preferred alternate venue Eagle Farm, said the club would not enter negotiations with the Magic Millions company if approached to host the event.

The BRC sent a letter to GCTC chief executive Grant Sheather yesterday after their board this week passed a motion not to make any attempts to poach the $4.6 million raceday.

"BRC has absolutely no intention of attempting to lure feature race dates away from other clubs, specifically the BRC believes the Magic Millions should be held at the Gold Coast racecourse and conducted by the GCTC," read the letter.

"If moves were made by Magic Millions to move the Magic Millions races to Eagle Farm, the BRC would not hold any discussions or negotiations with Magic Millions."

The BRC board voted on the resolution after speculation arose about the future of the event at the Gold Coast and Eagle Farm was again raised as an alternate venue.

Magic Millions would now have to move the event away from Queensland if they wanted to strip it from the Gold Coast.

The BRC said they would only negotiate with the GCTC over the future of a Gold Coast-based Magic Millions raceday and that would only be in the unlikely event the Bundall club decided they wanted to host the meeting but rent Eagle Farm's larger facilities.

Gold Coast Turf Club chairman Andrew Eggleston last night heaped praise on the BRC for their stance.

"This shows that clubs can work together and that's what racing should be about," he said.

"We've got plans to improve and better cater for crowds with the facilities we have at the Gold Coast and this gives us further substance to press ahead with those plans."

Sheather said he was hopeful the formal statement would switch attention back on to the meeting.

"It puts the focus back on the raceday and back on our long-term plans to expand the event for the future and how we can promote it further both internationally and more nationally," he said.

"We want it to stay here, it's a great concept John (Singleton) and Gerry (Harvey) have created.

"They've done a great job and we want to work hand in hand with them."

Sheather confirmed the club had already begun preparations to look at expanding raceday facilities to include the infield for 2011.

bob's letter to the gctc while containing the usual threats, shallow, deep and concerning for stakeholders held one sentence of sense which variates from qrl's previous position, that being that qrl now has said it is not fixated on any model, differant to before but his suggestion that he will negotiate with others{a position he has been doing for years with singo and crew, qld treasury and chosen trainers}....the hollow threats about frensic accounting show him up for the despised despot bully that he is........pk do you remember palm meadows and the gondolas......what did that cost your stakeholder mates? wonglepong/bentwad park, andrews court case?millions.....pure and simple the despot has to swallow his shallow tounge =retire in disgrace and let some real people sort this shit out

Front page Bulletin this morning!  QR has not given GCTC date for MM in latest race calendar.   Mexican stand-off still in play with GCTC refusing to hand over major equity in Club.

Magic Millions on the brink

Daniel Meers   |  March 25th, 2010

THE Gold Coast Turf Club has not been allocated a race meeting on Magic Millions day, tentatively stripping the city of the lucrative $60 million carnival.

In a shock revelation, Queensland Racing Limited did not assign the January 15 Magic Millions meeting in its draft list of race dates for next season because of an impasse with the Gold Coast Turf Club board.

Gold Coast Turf Club bosses last night revealed they had set the booming sales company a Friday deadline to agree to a new deal.

The move comes as Magic Millions bosses continue to meet the Victorian Government about proposals to run the event at Flemington as early as next year and relations between QRL and the turf club sour over a proposed redevelopment of the track.

QRL chairman Bob Bentley yesterday confirmed the date had not been assigned because Magic Millions had not agreed to a deal.

"The date has been held open at this stage," he said.

"There is no deal signed yet between Magic Millions and the Gold Coast Turf Club.

" ... we want it held at the Gold Coast -- most definitely.

"It's a Gold Coast event and that's where we want it to stay but we've got to work through the issues."

It is understood Magic Millions, which wants the turf club to accept a potential $75 million upgrade deal with Queensland Racing, are furious the club continues to hold out and not accept the terms.

The board last month voted not to enter any agreement unless they were the major equity holder of the site.

Turf club chairman Andrew Eggleston said the club had laid out a five-year deal to Magic Millions which had catered for potential redevelopment.

"We have contacted them this week and we do want an answer before Friday -- the ball is in their court," he said.

Queensland Racing Minister, and the Coast's only minister, Peter Lawlor, yesterday refused to enter into the issue, declaring it was not his role to be involved in race date allocations and commercial arrangements between turf clubs and Queensland Racing.

So Peter Lawlor doesn't see it as part of his duties as Minister Of Tourism to preserve the Magic Millions in Queensland. Why were these fools reelected last year?

Nothing but Bully boy tactics PK,

In the playground he would have copped a bashing by now, just the same as when he copped a bashing when he tried to dictate to the jockeys

If the GC have any balls, they will do what Eagle Farm, Doomben, and the Jockeys did to him.

Make him look like the real fool he is.

Just a shame that his bully boy tactics have worked on some, like the TTC, and the Sunshine Coast.

Peter Lawlor what a waste of space.Would be the most underachiever ever to have held the racing portfolio and there's been some poor ones rant

It,Racing, isn't mentioned in his ministerial  title. Like maybe he doesn't want anyone to know about it.

Hows that for being inconspicuous. He's invisible. Thumbs Down

I guess if Magic Millions go elsewhere, GCTC won't be needing any or as much money for an upgrade then, after all its only a provincial track at this point in time

Wonder what else they can do with the money

Turf club tries lease offer

Daniel Meers   |  March 27th, 2010

Gold Coast Turf Club chairman Andrew Eggleston will offer Queensland Racing a deal to save the Magic Millions

THE Gold Coast Turf Club board will this weekend offer to lease their racing and training tracks to Queensland Racing in an 11th-hour bid to save the long-term future of Magic Millions and secure an upgrade of facilities.

GCTC chairman Andrew Eggleston last night revealed the board had voted to offer to a `compromise proposal' to Queensland Racing which would see the club lease the course proper and training tracks to the governing body for $1 a year.

That would allow QRL to start their multi-million dollar upgrade of all racing facilities.

The sticking point would be equity, with QRL seeking ownership of the property.

In a win for owners and trainers, the board last night voted not to increase training fees yet.

Eggleston said he would run the proposal past QRL boss Bob Bentley this weekend.

"The board will offer Queensland Racing a lease on the whole racetrack, infield and training facilities for an upgrade on a long-term lease on a minimal fee of one dollar," he said. "This should avoid the equity issue."

Eggleston said the club would take control of the grandstands and bars which they would be in a position to borrow money to upgrade.

"The Gold Coast Turf Club would be then in a position to look at upgrading the facilities, such as grandstands, and we believe we would be in a position to borrow $20 million for an upgrade and we would service the debt ourselves," he said.

Eggleston said the proposal, which was the brainchild of the club's racing adviser Brian Fletcher, was an opportunity to break the deadlock between the two parties.

The turf club have refused to meet QRL because they do not want the governing body to take equity of the turf club.

It has created an impasse between the two bodies as well as Magic Millions, who want the club to agree to QRL's original proposal.

As a result, QRL has not allocated the Gold Coast a race date on Magic Millions day and the sales company has not signed a contract to race at Bundall.

"The proposal is a big move, it will help this process move forward," said Eggleston.

"We believe it is in the best interest of racing. We think it is a good option.

"The board will now be happy to meet with Queensland Racing."

So they are happy to mortgage the grandstand and surrounds to the  bank, but they wont enter into an equity arrangment with the industries own control body? Wonder how responsive the bank will be if the club cant payback borrowings ?
