I got this from another forum, but it illustrates the weakness of bookies in Brisbane. On January 2nd racing was conducted at both Doomben ( metropolitan Brisbane ) and the Gold Coast. The following were the final percentages of the SP's on the Doomben races. Gold Coast may have been the major meeting, but is it any wonder attendances on track are falling ? How many bookies were fielding that day? Is it any wonder outside a few weeks in winter Brisbane racing holds no interest outside of Queensland ? What has happened with Queensland racing that it allows bookies to get away with such ridiculous percentages ? 1 - 156% 2 - 178% 3 - 174% 4 - 173% 5 - 159% 6 - 181% 7 - 188% 8 - 168% Thats an average 172 % a race, equivalent to 5's on the head and 5's on the tails in a coin toss. I am fully aware by shopping around on the internet one can get better odds but as for the on course punters they are left high and dry.

Put that way, Bubba, it sounds pretty dire, but it's just a symptom of what's happened to on-course bookmaking, it's on its last legs. Scribe in the paper said there were many growling about the percentages, but the bookies ( must have been at least 2 ) had a bad day anyway.

Was not classed as a metro meeting, apparently, bookies probably went to the Coast, which was where the money would have been.

The 'real' bookies for that meeting were behind computer screens on Betfair. By the way, Bubba, were you organized for that late scratching odds-oner at Ararat, must have been terrific value in Quaddie away from the sub.

Just checked SP's and beside each winner is Unitab dividend 1.9/4 $ 4.20 2.6/1 $ 11.00 3. 2/5 $ 1.30 4. 8/11 $ 2.00 5. 11/8 $ 3.60 6. 6/4 $ 2.50 7. 7/2 $ 4.80 8. 9/2 $ 12.50
Do you really believe bookies had a bad day ? They could have bet back on tote 6/8 winners to cover their liabilities.

Amusing to hear the Sky parrot talking about the 'terrific value about a number of runners in this race'. Depends what price they layed them at, Bubba, but that was the line peddled in the press.

Concession, thats an interesting thought, wonder if the tote can manage that, or would it be impossible in a parimutuel situation ?

That was a great opportunity at Ararat today, only problem any one of five horses could have been substitute. I do not bet quaddies, but if I had, I could have still stuffed it up. Substitute which just got beaten run around as 4/1 shot SP and was probably 2/5 shot in quaddie. If it had been clear cut who was substitute it would have been easy but alas, the substitute was only known after the race.

I calculated the odds through the running double on races 5 & 6 at Ararart today and although all the dead money went onto the substitute the winner, although not sub, still only paid around 11/2 through that double. It just goes to show there are a lot of smarties out there who know what to do when the a shorty is taken out just prior to a race.

Yes, Smerdon's 4/6 favourite won the next leg of that running double so all the smarties could not have missed that double, if they had guessed the sub ( the horse to be avoided ) in the first leg correctly.

I have had a quick look at the poison SP odds bet by those bookies fielding at Ipswich this afternoon. Race 1 164 % Race 2 166 % Race 3 181 % Race 4 193 % Race 5 148 % Race 6 174 % I could go no further as I had to have a stiff drink to get over what has been served up. Only consolation for those betting with those fearless bookies the SPs upto Race 6 were 6/4: 5/2 : 15/8: 9/4 : 9/4 & 9/4

Bubba, I advise you don't bet with bookies and fixed odds. Turn to Big 6's and Quaddies on the totes
