Hi, We are about to enter the racehorse world. Will be choosing from 6 x 4 month old foals to be weaned at 6 months old. I'm OK with horse confirmation, but foals are a bit of a mystery. Can any astute horse owners/breeders/students please send me tips on what to look for when we evaluate these foals?  Cheers,

Look for a good eye, symmetry , and balance.

Plenty of other stuff to look for, but I also like a horse with a little cheek, and attitude, you will find they will have a better constituation, then the weaker more timid types  smiley

The pedigree page is most important.

Are you wanting to race or pinhook?

Who was that member that lobbed in probably 12 months ago and asked a similar question?

He was given plenty of advice and never returned to read the posts I don't think  lol

Have always been taught to look for the athlete before looking at the pedigree

Some weanlings are going to be stand outs Matt, and others are not going to have the same sort of class, even at that age.

But yes it is tricky, and why I think symmetry is very important.

A horse with a good balanced head, ie, the left side of the head mirrors the right side, will be a more balanced type imo, but when it all comes down to it, pedigree, looks, shape mean very little, unless they have what it takes inside Undecided

But I was always taught, to pick the athlete, then look at the pedigree second, and that was from some very astute judges

HI, have just returned to try and find my request for advice on foals. Have been in Victoria looking at a few. Its now all as clear as mud!! I think you cant predict performance, but can look at conformation and pedigree? I worried about offset knees (lots seemed to have them) and also lack of bone? One that we really liked seemed to have on knee not as straight as its mate? We are wondering whether to yearling sales, and concentrate on a slightly older version. We are still considering a few foals we looked at, and have asked for photos to be sent in a month or so. Would still appreciate some tips on evaluating weanlings, someone said to judge a foal by its walk toward and away from you. What exactly should I be looking for? The foals werent weaned, so couldnt be led.
cheers,

Hi, Thanks for answering. We want to race, definitely not pinhooking. Will raise and further education at our place, and race as 3 yr old.  Hoping to form partnership with friends when the time comes.  We've paid off the mortgage and just trying to do one of those things you've always dreamed about. Will get it professionally broken etc. Extremely hard trying to choose one! Hope to race it for a long time, if good enough and sound.
Cheers,

In that case, as Magic said, go for the athlete as long as the family throws winners. They don't have to be champs littered with black type, just winners beer

wileys correct look at the mare if her or her mother produced winners thats a great start . to look for a perfectly built horse without some sort of minor problem you'll be still looking for it in 10 years. most of those little problems a horse has grown up with will rarely affect them.

Hi, thanks for the advice, it all sounds pretty spot on. We might buy a yearling, easier to spot an athlete? Or I could just borrow some money, and buy anything by "High Chaparral" He's magic!
