Bob Bentley on Racing retro today, $85m for upgrade of Queensland racing infrastructure over 4 years conditional on agreement for a single control body consisting of 5 from racing and 1 each from greyhounds and harness racing.

The latter group not too pleased with their single rep which is   based on the relative contributions the 3 codes make to revenue 80, 11 & 9% respectively according to Bob.Whether that is Bob's idea or the Governments wasn't made clear.

They don't  they need a board of 7 when QRL has managed with a 5 person body and the others are even smaller.Big isn't necessarily better when it comes to boards and committees. So why would they want 7 members when racing will have a majority say anyway?

I reckon it's because the existing 5 QRL directors will retain their seats and slot into the new positions and in the process satisfy the ARB as being industry rather than Government appointees.

It's about preserving the status quo  at a greater cost to stakeholders but of benefit to  current QRL directors some of whom have limited tenure due to either not being eligible for reappointment or having to face an election in due course.

Singo said  later there was a meeting on Friday with Treasury,QRL and Magic Millions to agree on details some of which were disclosed by Bob when answering questions.Gold Coast is the priority with funds to establish a new greyhound complex at Underwood and he also mentioned the need to fix Albion Park.

If the Government wants to be seen as unbiased it would limit the new body to 5 members 2 from racing and 1 each from greyhounds and harness racing with a independent chairperson I am King
So its all systems go maybe

more bluff, duff, smokescreens and bullshit from the despised despot who is desperate to remain the most hated figure in australian racing.......he says the new "structure" ---most are sure the "structure" involves qrl taking ownership of tab clubs=all revenue.........is the bloke a meglo-m or does he not realise after all his vote rorts, disasters, impolsions and money squandering that he himself is the very reason why stakeholders should be told about bib bobs grand plans...its incredible that the 3 biggest clubs have not been consulted by god{bib bob} or his disgraced bankrupt government mates

it must heart breaking for the babbling bogan to see his old club ipswich doing so well, ever since merry merri rose handed back the freehold to ipswich turf club. There are plans afoot for rather impressive building on the brisbane road site with a joint venture partner which will ensure an immediate and on going cash flow for the ipswich turf club. bit like the new plans for brc round the racecourse road entry. the babbling bogan is no doubt trying to fix a way of getting back the freehold of both these venues so he can spread his intoxicated tentacles on these clubs as well and try to destroy them cause as it stands now ther are moving ahead in leaps and bounds and theres nothing the bb ca bop

From the office of the Treasurer of Qld.

Massive new investment in Queensland racing industry

Magic Millions redevelopment first cab off the rank

The Bligh Government will help ‘usher in a new era’ for the racing industry, with a funding package of more than $80 million over four years to redevelop key facilities across the state.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the funding package, sourced from the redirection of half of the revenue gained from wagering taxes, will help revitalise an industry that has been estimated to directly and indirectly employ 43,000 people across the state.

"The racing industry is critical to Queensland’s economy and many local communities,” Mr Fraser said.

“We have identified the need to redevelop the industry’s ageing infrastructure to usher in a new era of racing – something the industry cannot achieve on its own.

“It is the government’s desire to see a major redevelopment of the Gold Coast Turf Club, the home of the Magic Millions carnival, undertaken as soon as possible.

“It is an important event to the Gold Coast and Queensland, and needs a world-class facility in order for the event to grow.

“The government also believes a new greyhound facility at Logan is a key priority.

“As they say, if you build it, they will come.”

Mr Fraser said as part of the biggest overhaul of racing in Queensland in generations, he and Racing Minister Peter Lawlor had received a merger proposal from the heads of both the Thoroughbred and Greyhound codes.

The government supports industry reform to strengthen its future and has provided in-principle support for the proposal. The government intends to legislate early this year to facilitate the proposal.

Representatives of the Harness code have agreed in-principle to the importance of a merged control body, but have not yet formally proposed to participate.

Mr Fraser said the commitment of funds was a commitment to reform and sustainability.

“The government will allocate this funding to a new amalgamated racing body, which will have the financial and administrative strength to take the industry forward and invest this money appropriately.

“The government would welcome the involvement of the Harness code.”

Mr Lawlor said the funding injection is critical to the sustainability of the industry into the future.

“This is a big win for the industry and particularly the Gold Coast,” Mr Lawlor said.

“The government will stump up the money to improve the facilities, which will then allow the Magic Millions owners to reach for the sky, and see the event reach its potential on the international stage.”

Mr Lawlor said the investment will benefit the industry across the state.

“This is a major step forward for Queensland’s racing industry.”

Bob Bentley comes out blazing:

11 January 2010

Stephens awakes from his summer slumber

Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) chairman Mr Bob Bentley has today declared that Ray Stephens’ (Shadow Minister for Racing and Member for Mermaid Beach) recent outburst criticising the Queensland Government for its funding package for the racing industry shows that he must be permanently in holiday mode.

“It’s as if he has been woken up and thinks that he has a duty to criticise the Queensland Government notwithstanding the Government has just confirmed a significant funding package for the racing industry including the Gold Coast Turf Club,” said Mr Bentley.

“The fallacious claims in his recent press release are typical of those we have become accustomed to from Stephens. Too lazy to pick up the telephone and ask a question or two, he continues to just fire shots in the air hoping to hit a target, any target. The LNP deserves better than this.

“The proposal to develop the Gold Coast Turf Club is to be a major development on the Gold Coast, redefining racing in the opposition Premier’s own electorate - hardly politically motivated or dodgy.

“To make sure that the facts are public and there can be no misunderstanding; the following is the correct situation. The wagering tax redirection is a result of 12 months consultation and numerous submissions to the Bligh Government for the Racing Industry for all codes and is not just for the Gold Coast Turf Club. The submission will pass the toughest of markers on accountability.

“The tax relief is over four years and will gross up at approx $80 million. There will be other industry funds added and a commercial credit facility will be established to undertake essential industry projects in all codes.

“The funds will be made available to a combined control body with no collar from the Bligh Government. The projects have been identified in an “Issues Paper” and formed the basis of the submission.

“The Government is making available $80 million for infractructure projects for all codes of racing across the State. The funding injection is the largest ever by a government of any political persuasion.

“There is nothing coming back to the Government except the recognition of the importance of the racing industry and the 40,000 Queenslanders who derive their income from this industry and the critical need for infrastructure upgrades to sustain this employment.

“Ray, are you getting the message? Lights on yet?

“The statement by Stephens of $10 million being offered for the Bundall assets that he claims are worth $100 million along with his other ramblings, make no logical sense and are typical of Stephens’ lack of knowledge and understanding of this initiative.

“Stephens must be constantly domiciled in a dark room if he cannot understand that a major investment in the Gold Coast Turf Club to deliver on a significant development will require a change in the asset structure. This is merely commercial reality, something that the racing industry will have to come to grips with. The days of grants to private members clubs are over.

“Full consultation will be carried out with the members of the Gold Coast Turf Club as soon as possible. The proposed development will not impede the enjoyment of members, only add to and enhance their racing experience.

“The proposal by Queensland Racing with the funding package by the Bligh Government will provide increased events on the Gold Coast and lift prizemoney for stakeholders to new levels.

“If Stephens were serious about the advancement of the Gold Coast and the well being of his electorate, he should be congratulating the Bligh Government not making stupid assumptions. He should, I suggest, see what the LNP can do to help.

“Unfortunately, conspiracy theories of the kind contracted by Ray Stephens are an incurable condition.”

You, you, you, . . Dont you worry about that young Maxie

That press release was riddled with subliminal National Party messages which are obvious to the party faithful

Bob obviously has his eye on a National Party seat based on or near a provincial racing centre where his popularity will see him win in a landslide

In fact I see him as the new Racing Minister in the LNP Government and a possible challenger to the Dentist for the TOP JOB
