I am thinking of getting a dog for something different and just wondering if you guys maybe able to point me in the right direction.
I did look for a thread on this but couldn't find one so apologise if it's been before..
Scenario....
Would like to spend 1k-4k on one...
Would like to send it to a trainer in melb...

I looked up some websites and found those syndicate ones ($1695 for 5 greyhounds and a 20th I think) but I am always against those (except if your that bloke that owned Polar Success/Savabeel & Hexus first up) as I think someone is in  it to make money and fair enough..

Is there a sales like the races where you buy pups??

I heard of some trainers that you pay the initial outlay for a pup and then go 50/50 on winnings and no training fees....Does this sound right and if so is it the norm in the sport??
Also what is the daily cost eg trots is about $33 a day and gallops I think $80-$100 a day??

All i mentioned to Denzil was maybe it would be better to buy a ready made dog from someone like Paul Wheeler. Raring costs, breaking in, vaccinations etc etc can be very very costly if your new to the sport . Buying a ready made dog, who has been broken in and has some ability for around $3k is alot better then paying the $10,000+ it would cost someone to not only buy a pup, but pay for it until it's 16 months,which is legal age for racing. If you want to 'dip ur feet' into greyhound racing, that is the least expensive way, buying a ready made dog. Give the dog to a trainer on a 50/50 basis and see how you go. Or train it yourself if u have the time. Training one greyhound is not hard at all... walking, feeding and taking it to the trials is very inexpensive.

Just my 2cents.

Depends what state your in mate. Getting a trainer's licence is not hard at all.

1. Are you kidding yourself by sending a dog to just anyone? I put a search on www.grv.org.au for metro melbourne public trainers and honestly didn't know one trainer. Is there much difference sending to Joe Blow rather than Bate or McDonald?

2. What is the rough racing career for a dog?

Joe Blow is your best option, unless your dog is setting the track on fire. Trainers like Bate,McDonald etc etc won't touch a dog if it is a so so chaser and usually take dogs who have shown a lot of promise on the track in races. There are plenty of good trainers in Vic that may not get the big group 1 winners, but do have a good strike rate and will take anything as long as it can run. Public trainers on a 50-50 basis are all good mate, for the simple fact that if they can't get your dog to perform, they get nothing either.

Denzel, PM Box1Racing, he's a trainer in Perth.

Send a tried one over there 50/50, a mate of mine has sent plenty over for great success, he has Jim lee training them.

Prizemoney is good too
