Meagher Celebrates 400th Kranji Win

Trainer John Meagher has celebrated his 400th Kranji winner, eight years to the day since his team arrived on September 14, 1999, sending out their first runner and first winner on September 28, 1999 when Quorum won, kicking off an illustrious training period for the Meagher team.

"It is without saying, a team effort," said Meagher who counts himself lucky to have three right hand men in sons Daniel, Chris and Paul.

Appropriately enough the 400th winner came with a super run by Lim's Glory who is raced for well known owner Lim Siah Mong, who has continually supported both Meagher and the Singapore racing industry.

"He (Lim) has been my best supporter without a doubt and I am really happy that this milestone was reached with one of his horses."

As for the ride of regular stable rider KB Soo on Lim's Glory?

"God bless his heart (KB) what more can I say?!"

Lim's Glory jumped away from barrier 12 and was able to show enough speed to cross in a slowly run race to be settled on the rails with Strategy (Peter Lao), who had also been able to cross with him, this time from barrier 11.

Both the front runners had an easy time of it in front and while Strategy battled on well Lim's Glory had enough in the tank to stave off his challenger by a length and a half with Imperial Treasure (Matt Kellady) finishing third a further length back.

By Gilded Time from Elyria, Lim's Glory (AUS) has now won two from 18 to go with his five minor placings.

Meagher clocks in 500th win in Singapore

Popular trainer John Meagher reached a major milestone in his highly-successful career when he saddled his 500th Singapore winner at Kranji on Good Friday.

Meagher, who earned his highest accolades when he won the coveted Melbourne Cup with What A Nuisance in 1985, lived up to his big reputation when he relocated to Singapore in 1999 by always figuring in the Top 5 in the trainer’s ladder and racking up a slew of feature wins, none more prestigious than the Singapore Gold Cup with Kim Angel in 2000.

He sure was wearing a broad grin at the winner’s circle upon leading in the handy Dragon World after he scored a solid win in the $75,000 Class 3 race (1400m), as the significance of the achievement sank in.

Dragon World (Danny Beasley) gives trainer John Meagher his 500th victory in
Singapore.

“What a nice surprise - I had no idea it was my 500th winner. I just heard it from the race commentator,” said the Australian handler.

“This is some feat, eh? But it’s all about teamwork and not just my doing – everybody from my sons, Chris, Paul and Daniel to the jockeys, track riders, syces, owners have their part in the success.”

Amidst all the celebratory mood, Meagher was the first to acknowledge, though, he was not foolproof, more particularly so regarding his Friday winner, Dragon World.

“I’m the first to put my hand up. I made a mistake with him – I was too soft with him, as simple as that,” said Meagher.

“After his last win, I was kind to him as he is out of a Centaine mare. I shouldn’t have been so soft as it took the fitness edge off him when he resumed.”

Sent out as a hot favourite on March 29, Dragon World petered out inside the final furlong, running fourth to Drovetti.

Jockey Danny Beasley also admitted the soft approach may have accounted for his last-start failure but the team had learned from their mistake with immediate results.

“After he beat Noble Manor, we gave him a freshen but didn’t do enough with him. That was why his condition gave out in the last 200m,” said Beasley.

“We made a mistake but quickly rectified it. We gave him a few gallops and his weight was down by 9kg this time and down to his right racing weight, and we got the results today.

“I don’t want to give him too big a wrap, but I would be very surprised if he doesn’t end up winning in Class 1 one day.”

Punted down to $15 favouritism again, Dragon World dropped back to be worse than midfield but had the benefit of settling on the fence after jumping from the inside alley.

When the field fanned out at the corner, Dragon World was quick to level up with the leaders, but Kept Secret (Mark Gallagher) and Subordinate (Ric McMahon) were also chiming in. But at the wire, Dragon World proved too dominant to prevail by three parts of a length from Kept Secret with Subordinate settling for third another half-a-length away.

Dragon World is by O’Reilly and out of the Centaine mare Centelise and is raced by the R&W Stable. He is now the stakes winner of close to $150,000 for a handy record of four wins and one second from six starts.
