Just  read this article on another forum, sad story:

HIGH-profile former radio personality and race caller Ron Papps has been charged with attempted murder following an alleged domestic incident.

Details of the case emerged today after Papps was remanded in custody following an appearance in Port Lincoln Magistrates Court Friday.

The 64-year-old - who received an Order of Australia Medal in 1994 for his services to racing - was arrested after an alleged incident at his Port Lincoln home on Thursday.

Police would not confirm the identity of the victim but it is understood the incident involved Mr Papps' wife Judy.

A police spokesman confirmed officers were called to a property in Parnkalla Ave at 9.30pm in connection with a domestic-related incident.

It was not known if the victim had suffered any injuries but an SA Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics were not called to the street.

The police spokesman confirmed: ``A 64-year-old man from Port Lincoln was arrested and charged with attempted murder over a domestic-related incident and has been remanded until February 3.''

Papps was the voice of racing in South Australia for more than 30 years .

He became the youngest race caller in Australia when at 17 he went to Hobart in 1962 to work at race meetings for the ABC.

The Vietnam veteran also worked for 5DN in Adelaide as a commentator for all three racing codes before moving to Melbourne's 3UZ for five years.

In 1982, he returned to 5DN and cemented his place as one of racing's most recognisable voices through a 14-year association with FiveAA when it won the contract to broadcast races in 1985 through the station's TABRadio.

But the relationship ended bitterly in 1999 when he lodged an unfair dismissal claim against the station's owners Festival City Broadcasters.

Racecaller Ron Papps chased wife down corridor, court told

WELL-KNOWN race caller Ron Papps tried to smother his wife with a pillow before chasing her down a corridor, letting her go only when she bit him, a court has heard.

Judy Papps ran to a neighbour's house to get help following the attack, which led to police arresting Papps and charging him with attempted murder.

That charge was later dropped, with Papps this week pleading guilty in the Supreme Court to endangering his wife's life at their Port Lincoln home.

Justice Ann Vanstone today sentenced the 65-year-old Order of Australia recipient to two years in prison, but suspended the jail term on the condition he enter a two-and-a-half-year, $100 good behaviour bond.

"You said to her words to the effect that 'I am going to get you this time, I have been wanting to do this for a long time'," she said.

Justice Vanstone heard on Monday that Papps had tried to smother his wife when she rebuffed a drunken request for "cuddles".

His lawyer, Simon White, said Papps held false suspicions his wife was having an affair and wanted to return to sharing their bed "so at the very least he could lie next to her and have cuddles in a big bed".

Papps was remorseful and had since abstained from alcohol and sought counselling, he said.

Papps was a voice of racing for 30 years, having started when he was 17.
