Papps was the voice of racing in South Australia for more than 30 years .
He became the youngest race caller in Australia when at 17 he went to Hobart in 1962 to work at race meetings for the ABC.
The Vietnam veteran also worked for 5DN in Adelaide as a commentator for all three racing codes before moving to Melbourne's 3UZ for five years.
In 1982, he returned to 5DN and cemented his place as one of racing's most recognisable voices through a 14-year association with FiveAA when it won the contract to broadcast races in 1985 through the station's TABRadio.
But the relationship ended bitterly in 1999 when he lodged an unfair dismissal claim against the station's owners Festival City Broadcasters.
