AP Sports Writer

The owner of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra says his filly won't run against Zenyatta in a $5 million race in Arkansas, but he's proposing a three-race series in which the leading ladies will meet.

Jess Jackson says he has been in discussions with the president of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and hopes details can be worked out with the owners of Zenyatta.

In a news release issued Wednesday, Jackson says if training and racing schedules as well as purse money can be worked out, the three races would "rival the Triple Crown."

Jerry Moss, who co-owns Zenyatta with his wife Ann, was surprised by Jackson's announcement, and told The Associated Press: "I have no idea what he's even talking about. Which three races? And where? And when?"

A week ago, Oaklawn Park said it would boost the purse of the Apple Blossom on April 3 to $5 million from $500,000 if both horses competed.

"It's a shame they are not going to show up for that race," Moss said in a telephone interview with the AP. "In the meantime, there's some plan here, to run in three races, to which we're supposed to respond to, and we haven't even been consulted about it. So, I don't know what I'm supposed to say."

Moss did say Zenyatta remains on schedule to run in the Santa Margarita at Santa Anita on March 13, and then the Apple Blossom.

"Then we'll see what's next," Moss said, adding that the goal is to run in the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5-6. "The Breeders' Cup is something I honor. I believe that's where championships are decided."

Jackson, meanwhile, said he believes a series of races is the way to go, although he did not mention any races or racetracks he had in mind for the series that would conclude in November.

"The fans have spoken. The media has spoken. Everyone wants to see Rachel race against Zenyatta - including me," Jackson said. "In fact, I want it to happen several times this year."

The two champions have not met on the racetrack, and Rachel Alexandra beat out Zenyatta in voting for Horse of the Year.

Jackson's proposal calls for a three-race series that would conclude in November, the same month as the Breeders' Cup.

"Hopefully, these discussions will take place at the earliest possible time so that we can announce something that will give the fans a season to remember," Jackson said.

NTRA president Alex Waldrop said he supports any effort to put together a race featuring the sport's biggest stars.

"The NTRA will continue to do everything possible to facilitate a meeting or series of races between champions Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta," he said in a statement. "We look forward to further discussions with the connections of both horses."

Jackson passed on an invitation to the Apple Blossom because Rachel's trainer Steve Asmussen said the 4-year-old filly would not be in top form. Jackson said he asked for the race to be moved back a week, but Oaklawn officials declined the request.

"Out of respect for the level of competition and the importance of this race, I have told Mr. Jackson it was not in the best interest of the horse to race on April 3," Asmussen said. "Getting to this level of fitness after a six-month layoff takes time. If all goes according to schedule, and we do not have any further weather delays, the earliest we could have a prep race would be the middle of March. It is then not fair to Rachel to ask her to race again three weeks later."

Rachel won all eight of her starts last year, including victories against males in the Preakness Stakes, the Haskell Invitational and the Woodward Stakes. She was the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness.

Zenyatta was perfect in '09, too, and improved her career record to 14-0 by becoming the first female to win the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Now take into account the circumstances and it becomes an absolute sporting tragedy.

I have never watched the horse race before this morning, but I honestly thought it had been nobbled and they were going to pull it up early on.
Did not travel at all early!
Is that the usual deal with this horse?

I don't think it is usually that dramatic, to be so far off the second last horse.  tears

It is all so depressing. I like to think that not much gets me down but twice this week I have been a ghost.

Watching So You Think pull his head off for 1600m and still be ahead with 200m to go was bad enough. I mean, I throw my tickets away when a horse pulls for 100m in a 6 furlong race. The channel 7 close up shows Arnold still has him under a grip rounding the turn. My mate is mates with Arnold's missus and he said that it was the most torrid ride of his life. But he didn't want to take anything away from the winner- something he repeats a lot in his interviews. This is a weakness in SYT though and takes away from his greatness.

But Zenyatta topped it.

I still cannot believe it. My mates and I watched it together and still haven't been able to discuss it despite spending the whole day together.

Heard the race yesterday..just saw it on video now.
Unbelievable run...she must have been 10l behind the 2nd last horse early on.
The caller tried to get her home but just needed a few more strides.

I have never seen anything like her before...settles well behind the 2nd last horse in all her races. She just musn't muster up any speed early.

I think if the jockey had have swept to the outside instead of going for the fence on the turn she wins.

She's a great mare, but I always have the same problem with American racing.
Drugs.
How good was Secretariat?  I watched him win the Belmont by 31 lengths in 2.24 flat for 12 furlongs.
But the jockey still couldn't hold him.  He'd just set the world record for 12 furlongs and now he had
broken the record for 13 furlongs.  Stevens couldn't pull him up.
Very suspicious to me.
I think it also explains why very few American horses run anywhere else.  Dubai excepted, and I get the feeling
that a special red carpet has been rolled out there in the past to get Americans to race there.  Including the fact
that the main event, the Dubai World Cup has been held on dirt.  Only the Yanks run on dirt.  This is changing but
it is a fact of the past.  Did Dubai also give them a free ride on the drugs too?
Sorry gang.  I've liked almost every Yank I've met so don't think I'm an American basher.
I just don't trust their racing .... and because of that, I don't know how good their horses really are.

Blame (right) beats zenyatta in the classic at churchill downs louisville 6.11.10

Zenyatta's racing career 'still in discussion'

A DECISION on Zenyatta's future may not emerge until the end of the month, according to her trainer John Shireffs who said "where she's going is still in discussion".

Shirreffs said owners Jerry and Ann Moss were still deciding whether the mare would return to the racetrack, though the trainer himself has already suggested her career may be over in the wake of her heartbreaking defeat in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic.

In an interview with Reuters, Shirreffs said bad luck had cost Zenyatta her chance of stretching her unbeaten run to 20, the mare having had her path blocked by the tiring Quality Road as she began her charge in the straight which ended in her getting to within a head of the winner Blame.

"Everybody wanted the fairytale ending," said Shirreffs. "We wanted it. All the fans wanted it. Going to Churchill Downs undefeated, going against the boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic - it was just a great story. We wanted the perfect ending. We didn't get the perfect ending but we saw a horse with a tremendous amount of heart that really tried. She was layingit all down.

John Shirreffs: still in discussion

"In these kind of races you just need a break and have some luck somewhere in the race. On Saturday, Zenyatta just didn't catch a break anywhere. When Quality Road backed up in front of her and Mike [Smith] had to alter course and take back, that was tough. She's zig-zagging down the lane, looking for a path, and has to check and go one more wide. That probably cost her."

Shirreffs said Zenyatta's performance had won her even more fans. "I've gotten so many e-mails and calls from people who thought she ran such a courageous race," he added. "People who didn't believe in her are now saying, 'Wow, she really is what they said she was.'"

The Mosses have yet to indicate what they will do next. Shirreffs said: "They are talking about making a decision by the end of November but I can't say for sure. Where she's going is still in discussion."

Zenyatta Crowned Horse of the Year

Updated: Tuesday, January 18, 2011 9:56 AM

By Eric Mitchell and

Ron Mitchell

Zenyatta, the daughter of Street Cry who sustained her only loss in 20 starts when second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr.  I), was honored Jan. 17 as North America’s Horse of the Year for owners Jerry and Ann Moss and trainer John Shirreffs.

The winner, announced during the Eclipse Awards dinner, received 128 first-place votes, edging out Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame, who received 102 votes. The third finalist for Horse of the Year honors, Goldikova, received five votes. There was one abstention and two no votes.

Moss congratulated the connections of Blame, noting “Blame is a wonderful racehorse.”

"It has been a great honor to be associated with the other two finalists," Moss said while accepting the award. He went on to acknowledge Zenyatta's breeder Eric Kronfeld of Maverick Productions, Don Robinson who foaled and raised the champion at his Winter Quarters Farm, and bloodstock agent David Ingordo, who bought her at auction, and Jeanne and April Mayberry of Mayberry Farm near Ocala, where Zenyatta was broke and trained. All these people were on stage with the the Mosses.

"(Mayberry Farm) called David and said we've got this filly here and you'd better get a good name for her," Moss said. "He asked why. They said, well you've either got one fast horse or a lot slow ones, because they all need two strides for every one she takes."

After the award presentation, Moss urged the industry to pay more attention to the fans of horse racing.

"I came from an industry that sued its fans when they started stealing music through Napster," he said. "There is sentiment in this business and you have to play to it. It is true in show business and it is true in racing. If you have a horse who gets people in the heart, then they want to came see them and get to know more about them, and you have the Beatles again."

Blame's co-owner/breeder Adele Dilschneider said Zenyatta was a wonderful mare and had a wonderful team.

"I'm thrilled for her," she said. "I'm glad it's over and everything has been decided. We are as proud as we can be of our horse. He's done nothing but make us thrilled, and I'm glad to be a part of him."

Blame's trainer Al Stall Jr. said no one on the Classic winner's team is disappointed.

"We did the best we could do," he said. "We showed up every time and won them all except for one. We were pointing for the Breeders' Cup Classic and answered the bell that day. That was our main goal all year and after that whatever happens happens. We're good. We're going to keep going to work and Claiborne is going to keep breeding horses, and we'll just try to do it again."

The Eclipse Awards are voted on and presented by the NTRA, Daily Racing Form (DRF) and National Turf Writers And Broadcasters (NTWAB). The votes are tabulated and certified by Strothman and Company.

Winners in all categories (horse ages in parenthesis where applicable) were announced at the 40th annual Eclipse Awards ceremony at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach in Miami Beach, Fla.

The winners, in each category, were:

— 2-Year-Old Male: Uncle Mo
— 2-Year-Old Filly:  Awesome Feather

This voting established the top three finalists in each division, the names of which were released on Jan. 6, 2011. Eclipse Award winners; however, were determined by first-place votes only.

I was really interested to see there seemed to be much more passion and debate over these awards than in Australia. I wonder if that's right and why.
