Patrick Smith From: The Australian February 13, 2010

A FAMOUS Australian racing family is at the centre of unrelated stewards' probes in two states over betting irregularities.
It is believed Betfair integrity officers noted unusual betting patterns in certain accounts and notified stewards in Melbourne and Queensland.

Betting investigations in Victoria and Queensland have been ramped up after Victorian racing stewards broadened an inquiry into the performance of a horse ridden by leading jockey Danny Nikolic at Mornington last month.

Chief steward Terry Bailey would not comment but it is believed Racing Victoria's integrity team was looking at as many as four recent Nikolic rides. "In fairness to everyone involved I cannot comment any further than to say Nikolic has been told the Mornington inquiry has broadened," Bailey said.

In Queensland, trainer John Nikolic, Danny's brother, yesterday faced stewards again after Baby Boom, a short-priced favourite ridden by jockey John Keating, finished fourth. The stewards report after the race said a post-race veterinary examination of Baby Boom failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Queensland chief steward Wade Birch confirmed yesterday that unusual trends on betting exchange Betfair drove the initial inquiry.

It is believed this Queensland inquiry may also be broadened to examine several other races which included Nikolic-trained runners. Birch said Queensland racing would be happy to work with Victorian stewards if required.

"At the moment our investigations centre only on the Sunshine Coast race," Birch said.

Bailey would not confirm that different betting patterns on Betfair had drawn the stewards to look at other races in more detail. "We look at all sorts of betting records," Bailey said.

Betfair, an international betting exchange whose Australian base is in Tasmania, allows punters to back horses to lose.

Victorian stewards opened an investigation when odds-on favourite Finishing Card, ridden by Nikolic, was beaten into second place by New Venture in a 1210m maiden at Mornington on January 8. The stewards report on the day said in part: "D Nikolic explained that after jumping from a wide barrier and being caught wide he would have had to restrain to the rear of the field to find cover and therefore allowed the gelding to stride forward."

One newspaper report described the run this way: "The Clinton McDonald-trained Finishing Card drew barrier 13, covered plenty of extra ground and flew home late. New Venture enjoyed a perfect run behind the leader and took advantage of a rails run to win."

Queensland stewards yesterday released a statement after they continued their inquiry into the performance of Baby Boom at the Sunshine Coast on January 3. It read: "Based on information obtained during investigations carried out in respect to betting on the race, the bounds of the inquiry were expanded to include the running and handling of Baby Boom on that day. Of particular concern to stewards was the Betfair activity on the race surrounding Baby Boom which indicated that a large volume of money had been wagered in support of the horse being unsuccessful.

"Trainer John Nikolic and rider John Keating were both questioned immediately following the race and both were directed to appear before the stewards today.

"At today's inquiry, evidence was taken from Mr Nikolic regarding his association with a Gold Coast punter who at this stage has declined requests from stewards to assist in their investigations.

"Mr Nikolic was also asked about the relationship he has with a person believed to be a commission agent based in Melbourne. This person was interviewed by chief steward Wade Birch in Melbourne last week.

"Further evidence was also taken from jockey John Keating who rode Baby Boom on the day in question."

The report concluded saying the inquiry had been adjourned to a time and date to be fixed.

Danny Nikolic, 35, is one of Australia's finest riders, a prolific Group I winner, who has ridden extensively overseas. He won the 2003 Caulfield Cup on Mummify for trainer Lee Freedman. He was stable rider for the prominent Lloyd Williams' team, winning Group Is on Perlin (Doomben Cup, Underwood Stakes) and Reset (Futurity Stakes, Australasian Stakes).

Older brother John had a long stint training in Malaysia before returning to Queensland.

The licensing of betting exchange Betfair in Australia was fought vigorously by the racing establishment. It was seen as a risk to integrity because it was possible to bet on horses to lose. It was also opposed because it was seen as a threat to tote betting which traditionally provided racing's revenue.

In addition to betfairs identity trail....would stewards have the power to access phone records in lead up to these races ??? I'd like all stable employee phones to be looked at ...as they would not use their own phones if something dodgy was going on..

They might buy two or three prepaid phones like that bloke who was recently murdered in Melbourne . He was swinger and he bought five prepaid phones to keep his identity secret. If there is a means there is a way.

Why did Nikolic look back three times in the running ?

He copped a fair amount of buffering from one on his inside--will there be an inquiry into the ride on the thing that was on his inside approaching the turn--appeared more interested in having the favourite beat rather than win the race himself

Gee years ago if you rode a hot ride, you made sure you didn't get beat in a photo--the horse lost simply because of the interference he suffered appraoching the point of the turn--take the horse on his inside out of the picture and he wins by lengths, even allowing for him being wide.

According to press in Melbourne, enquiry is looking into DN's rides on 13 November 2009. I have had a quick look over his rides that day on Betfair. If there is anything of a suspicious nature on that day the stewards must be fumbling in the dark.

Race 2 – PROGRESS SIGNS SV 3YO MAIDEN PLATE - 1210 metres:

The start of the race was delayed to avoid a clash with Wagga harness races.

Acting on a report from the starter regarding the unruly barrier manners of Moon Of Baroda stewards rang and notified the stable of trainer L Freedman that Moon Of Baroda must trial prior to racing again.

On jumping away Laudrup shifted in and bumped Better Choice.

Also on jumping away Supreme Athena was hampered when tightened for room by Finishing Card, which after jumping away awkwardly, shifted in and Kyiv News, which shifted out.

Finishing Card raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.

Passing the 500 metres Teretoa (NZ) (B Higgins) shifted out and hampered Supreme Athena. Shortly after this Moon Of Baroda shifted out and took Teretoa (NZ) out onto Finishing Card. Teretoa (NZ) and Finishing Card then again came together on several occasions due to Teretoa (NZ shifting out. When questioned B Higgins reported to stewards that the saddle on Teretoa (NZ) had shifted sideways and for that reason he was unable to straighten his mount.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight New Venture was held up for clear running.

Hey Charger was held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.

In the early part of the straight Kyiv News raced ungenerously when under pressure.

D Nikolic, rider of Finishing Card, explained to the stewards that near the 400 metres he looked back on three occasions after hearing calling from rider R Maloney (Supreme Athena). D Nikolic further added that R McDonald, representing trainer C McDonald, stated that he would prefer the colt to race outside other runners as Finishing Card does not race well in amongst the field and also due to jumping from a wide barrier.

Stewards today (Sandown 13/1/10) reconvened an inquiry from the Mornington meeting and took further evidence from D Nikolic rider of Finishing Card, second placegetter, and evidence from trainer Mr C McDonald and stable representative Mr R McDonald who saddled Finishing Card on the day.   Both Mr C McDonald, who was absent on the day, and Mr R McDonald stated that the instructions were to try and find some cover in the early stages and then allow the gelding to improve into the race around runners.  D Nikolic explained that after jumping from a wide barrier and being caught wide he would have had to restrain to the rear of the field to find cover and therefore allowed the gelding to stride forward.  D Nikolic further added that near the 400m he looked back on three occasions due to calling from riders R Maloney (Supreme Athena) and B Knobel (Laudrup).  When questioned, R Maloney confirmed that he was calling near the 400m and B Knobel explained he did not call near the 400m however there was calling from other riders at that stage of the race.  Stewards noted the explanations of all parties however adjourned so as to review betting information on the race.

This is what the real inquiry should be about.

RVL Inquiry demanded DN hand over his phone so stewards could check the identity of contacts. He refused ,previously had provided details according to press reports.
Appears his refusal was based on his lawyer's advice, have to wonder why. Press reports claim none of the trainers involved expressed any concerns over the ride on their horses.Inquiry also heard from a pro punter and a commissioner. No statements were made by RVL at the conclusion of proceedings.

More to come. what
