One of racing's worst-kept secrets was made public in today's C-M when it was revealed that Wayne Wilson will retire from race calling on August 7.

Called me plenty of winners in my time on the punt. But even more losers  lol

Great racecaller imo who will be missed.

Wayne Wilson has been the voice of Brisbane racing for several decades.  He joined the old service on 4BC in the late-60s as under-study to Vince Curry - who I regard as the doyen of callers of post-War racing in Brisbane.

Wayne's main gig in the early days was the Saturday night trots, when thousands crammed into Albion Park.  He called the provincials and stood in for Vince during holidays, and Vince's protracted illness in the early 1980s.  He became the main gallops caller on 4BC on Vince's untimely death in 1983.

Wayne has called Brisbane gallops on 4TAB since its inception, and regularly fills-in on Sky Channel.  He also is the main caller for the Brisbane racetracks.

These days, in addition to his race-calling, Wayne contributes to the on-course BRC TV broadcasts.

Wayne has had his own well-publicised battles with ill-health.  There has been speculation this was the reason for his decision to hang up the binoculars, but he made it clear during a 4TAB interview this morning that this is not the reason.

He was my second favourite caller after Ian Craig.  They were talking about his retirement on Racing Retro yesterday.

Wayne Wilson reportedly still has nightmares over the Robian Steel-Don't Play Stradbroke finish, but one race he got right was the 1991 O'Shea Stakes when he named the first 6 over the line in order.

Interesting that if he had his time again he wouldn't change anything about his call on Media Puzzle.
Have often heard on radio some of his earlier calls, loved his style, like that of Campaign King when winning the double in Brisbane  Thumb Up

Yeah, there are two polarised views on the MP call. chin

Regardless of WW's opinion, it would be disappointing to have controversy surrounding what was - or what should have been - one of his career highlights.

I just went searching for the place-getters in that race (because I couldn't remember them), and I ran across this.

Quote
Bonuses  - AUD$500,000 bonus to the owner for any horse that can win the Melbourne Cup and the Irish St. Leger at Curragh Racecourse in Ireland in the same year.

Never heard about that before.

Interesting interview on Briz31 last night with David Fowler putting the questions to WW reminising, mainly on his many years of involvement in calling harness racing at Albion Park, brought back many memories of how good it used to be in the early days and nights after night trotting started in Brisbane.
I reckon WW was looking through his rose coloured glasses when he paid tribute to the late Russ Hinze as a "great man" although there is a lot to remember him for.

Fowler gives up calling the trots after the Winter Cup and Chris Barsby who is a pretty good caller takes over.

Harness racing is not what it used to be

I could not make the Brekky Creek luncheon so I guess I will also give this dinner a miss . On top of the $100 fee I would be up for an air fare from Melbourne to Brisbane and overnight accomodation in Brisbane.
