You don't have to be an original entry for the slipper, but if not have to pay a nomination fee (maybe $2,000??) and nominate a few months prior to the race. Original slipper entries are automatically nominated and exempt from the fee.

There is a further late entry clause of $50K similar to many big events.

I thought late entry in Slipper is $150k,

The reason it had group1 status from the first running is it is a replacement for the group1 Canterbury Guineas.

I think the reason is that this IS the Canterbury Guineas, rather than a replacement.  The difference in regards to the Golden Rose is that I do not think it was originally to be a replacement for the Peter Pan, as that race was originally scheduled to run 2 weeks before the Golden Rose.  The reason the date was moved forward was Newcastle complained the the Spring Stakes would be on the Wednesday in between the Golden Rose & Gloaming.  That meant it had the Peter Pan date, and it was easier to simply scrap the Peter Pan rather than try and find room for it - it could probably have been run a bit later if they really wanted to keep it.

It is - Golden Rose is $50K (I wasn't referring to the dollar value in my post btw, just that there is a late entry with significant fee.

Some tempting odds there if you want to bet around the favourite.

St Encosta overs at 125-1 for mine...ran 2nd in the Dulcify and then a long neck 2nd to Shamoline Warrior (both over 1800m)....not the top choice but not hopeless either.

Noticed Cosmocrat's run last start and the 16-1 appeals.

And maybe a patient ride on More Than Great (22-1) might improve him.

Run For Naara should get a cosy run from the draw,2nd up last time in was 2nd to Denman and was finishing the best in the race,More Than Great coming off a Randwick 1400m track record run was 3rd.

Keen to watch a replay, but Monton looked to be 3 deep early in a big dash for the lead, then raced ungenerously as he sat outside the leader, and at the 200m still looked like he could win! Given he beat Shoot Out and Capt Sonador in the Hobartville last start, might be one to forgive.

The horse he beat the start before that, Rock Classic, did a "hit and run" on the Aust Guineas. Tim Martin might be thinking today he should have taken him south!

Shoot Out is a good horse who seems destined to win more Group 1 races.
