I recently revived 1 such item .

Brush off any crap with a rag then pour some oil on and rub all over . Heat it up then pour some salt on and rub in with a cloth . Brush this off and  while still warm pour a little bit of oil on and rub plate with a cloth until all is coated .

Key is leaving a tiny bit of oil film on bbq when finished and then clean plate when starting a new bbq.

Good cooking

Not sure what size your plate is, but I just bought a cast iron one from Bunnings for $30

I use a nylon brush or similar with dishwashing liquid in a bucket of cold water. Ensure you rinse well.

Comes up a treat

It works for me & is the old KISS method. Keep it simple stupid

To clean mine, I normally just scrape it clean with the egg flip after use, then when going to use next time, just heat it up and clean it with an old rag and a wire brush.

I find rags better then newspaper and paper towel, as they leave tiny bits of paper all over the plate, after giving it a good scrub.

I never use water on the BBQ, right or wrong, last time the missus used to take to it with a hose, and it was rusted out in 2 years rant

I agree with grosvenor.

Except I'd use the wire brush rather than the rag.

Only because if I used the rag I'd have nothing to wear the next day.

Only kidding, use the wire brush and do what grosvenor says.

When I bought my BBQ some years ago, I also bought some BBQ cleaner stuff but never used it yet. Maybe should try it out one day.  smiley

What I do is scrape plate with spatula AFTER USE & dispose of gunk.
On starting up next time I heat up BBQ, splash a bit of water on it, when it's sizzling, (should be straight away) wipe over with paper towels.
Have a little scrape with spatula & then do it over again. Seems to work quite well.....
but I might start using a rag now instead of paper towels.
