and worth less than the 3yo fillies race this weekend - it's like the wakeful being worth more than VRC oaks - AJC has become a joke - the epsom and this - the prizemoney is laughable

You're not wrong, the prizemoney is pathetic given the comparable races in Melbourne. At leat there the Derby is worth $1.5m in total as opposed to the Oaks which is $1m. The first prize in the VRC Oaks of $600k i more than the total prize pool of the AJC Oaks which is laughable really.

Perhaps the Oaks should be worth half as much as the Derby ? The Derby is open to both males and fillies, the Oaks I am not sure about.

About the right ratio I would think. Why should the girls get any more for beating up other girls, they should have to take on the boys if the want the big money. The biggest joke in Australian racing is the VRC Oaks, which is worth 2/3rds of the VRC Derby. Just stupid.

Same reason the heavyweight champion of the world in the mens division gets more than the women boxers, people will usually pay more, if the fillies are really good they can also pick up the first prize cheque in the Derby! if the fillies want the same money then let the colts run against them as well!!

I think a more apt comparison would be professional male and female tennis player payments which are on par these days as opposed to male/female boxing People don't pay more to come and see the colts over the fillies in individual races, they come to see the whole program. I don't think anyone is disagreeing that the colts shouldn't get more than fillies but IMO it's just a bit of a joke that the AJC Oaks has such paltry prizemoney to it's (near) eqivalent. Sure, keep the Derby at $1.3m which i don't have a problem at all with but at the very least make the Oaks $500k. As it stands now there's nearly a million dollars difference and i don't think anyone could give a real valid reason why there's such a massive difference in the premier 3yo staying races. The VRC obviously sees there shouldn't be such a wide discrepency and pays out accordingly, it's just another thing the VRC do so much better than anyone else.

Maybe we should stop the geldings running in the Derby and then it can have $130,000 prize money based on the percentage of the male horse population eligible.

While the Victorian prize money is as it is, there will never be a filly run in the Derby. It is just not worth it. In the AJC equivalents, there is ample opportunity for a filly to run in the Derby, as there is a legitimate reward for having a go.

If they get equal prizemoney then fillies should be barred from running in the Derby?? Unless they let the Colts and Geldings run in the Oaks and that would defeat the purpose, fillies get 2 bites of the apple as opposed to the boys, is that fair?
