Singapore Form Comments Friday Night
Thursday, 30 August 2007

Full Race Card for Singapore Meeting Friday September 31

Form Comments

Race 1: Maiden 1,200m

Mountain Raider *** Heavily supported at debut, where he was slow to begin, so would be well worth following again with blinkers only for this run.
2 Mr Invincible * Drawn wide for debut so best just to watch with only fair form at the trials leading into this.
3 Orient upreme *** OK second placing at debut should see him run well again here with pacifiers added for this.
Prismatic ** Have to be considered disappointing at debut, when he struggled to finish fourth, so place looks best bet here.
5 Seto Pleasure * Has to improve on dismal debut but still no show here.
6 Taxi Elite  Hasn’t raced since poor debut in April and very hard to have on that run.
7 Clooney   One run on the sand was ordinary and would be prepared to overlook today and wait till he is back on the turf before considering.
8 Arowana Police ***

Had excuses at his last run and seems to go well on this surface so looks a big show tonight.

9 Capitol  Only having second run back from long spell and prefer to watch.
10 Kranji Beauty Hard to consider.
11 Bonbon Win * Expect improvement with gear removed but easy to ignore tonight from widest gate.
12 Rook   This doesn’t look suitable and should struggle to even place.
13  Ezee Does It EA1  ** Fresh enough to go OK but outside place chance only from awkward barrier.
14 Blooming Sakura EA2 * No.
15 Ausin EA3 Hard to consider.
16 Hanauma Bay EA4 ** Won’t get a run but worth following in similar races.

Race 2: Restricted Maiden 1,200m
1 Javelin ** Struggling to break through but gets a good chance here in a race with not many genuine chances.
2 Gassan Racing * Should improve on poor debut run but should still struggle.
3 Biwako * Can’t have.
4 Prince Gold **  Has to overcome awkward draw but looked OK at three runs thus far and expect good showing here.
5 Daring Rooy  * Can’t have on trial form but market is best guide for all newcomers.
King Of Lions  Didn’t really impress coming second in Official Race Trial so easy to overlook on debut from wide gate.
7 Raphael  *** This looks his for the taking after excellent effort to finish third in the Juvenile Championship and should open winning account tonight.
Sir Tiki * Showed nothing at his Official Race Trial and very hard to recommend.
9 Sweet Dreamer * Look for improvement but can’t see him playing a part in finish.

10

Thanks for Memory **

Had excuses last start so expect him to finish closer tonight.

11 Dusky Maiden  * Not for me.

Race 3: Class 5 (1) 1,700m
Just Amazing *** Looks a very good thing with huge drop in class coupled with a very handy inside gate.
2 Mavros * Won two starts back but wide barrier makes this impossible, although blinkers to his left side only have been added for this.
3 D’Mighty General * Doesn’t look like this is his favourite surface and prepared to overlook tonight.
4 Able Win ** Honest and a must for any exotic bets.
5 Bullish Run * Not good enough to take advantage of good draw.
Rapid Rabbit  Good run last time out but not sure if he is suited by the inside gate and could find himself in an awkward position in running.
Sky Dragon Bird ** Surprised a few by winning last time in at his first start on the sand, so has to be considered, although hard to be confident of a repeat performance.
Premier Night ** Excellent form on the sand leading into this and should finish in top three.
More To Win * First start on this surface and should struggle from wide gate.
10 Sidford  * Not the worst but can’t recommend.
11 Ninetyfive Sword  ** Blinkers back on, and can easily win a race like this, but bad gate makes place look best option tonight.
12 Master Of Triumph ** Needs to improve a few lengths to really threaten in races but battles away and place hope again tonight.

Race 4: Class 4 - 1000m

1 My Yeenjeen  *** Last start suggests he will appreciate this type of company and should go very close to winning.
2 Gutsy Star ** Form looks ordinary but could mix it with the best on the sand in his day, so worth watching from inside gate.
3 In The Pink  ** Has the pace to overcome bad gate to lead but not sure if he is good enough to use up that amount of petrol early and hold on for win.
Promise Me Gold ** Fresh for this but faces tougher company than his win back in March.
Nothing To Fear ** Gone OK at the trials, but taken a while to get to the track with market best guide tonight.
6 Aquila * Prefer just to watch again.
Golden Tiger  * Battles away but hard to see even placing here.
8 Royal Warrior  ** Disappointed punters last time out and looks place only hope here.
9   Billy-O  ** Always a place chance.
10 Zambucca  ** Another who you have to include in exotics but needs something easier than this to win.
11  Gourmet Paradise Struggling.

Race 5: Kranji Stakes C - 1100m
1 Spec Prince  ***  Last few runs have been in pretty good company so will appreciate this and expect a good show.
2 Magician *** Will have plenty of support from the one gate and will be hard to run down over concluding stages.
3 Lion’s Roar  ** Resuming from spell and, while drawn badly for this, is a sand specialist and could surprise.
4 My Hurricane *** Resumed with excellent win two weeks ago and, while this is tougher, no reason why he can’t step up again here.
5 Silent Force Doesn’t look suited.
6 Dark General * Another who doesn’t look suited here against some very sharp sand horses.
Masterful  ** Won his last two but wide draw is a concern as he steps up a grade.
Kakurei  ** Last start winner but does tend to struggle when he gets to this company.
9 Lion City Hero * Not in this.
10 Jasper Drawn horribly tonight but worth following after showing a bit at his last run.
11 Fortune Way   **  Certainly not the worst but prefer in something easier than this.
12 Chapter Two * Looked OK at the track but this is tough on debut and prefer just to watch.
13 Sovereign Rain EA1 * Resuming and hard to have although blinkers have been added.
14 Swift Strike EA2  * Not here.
15 Lucky Lucky EA3 * Needs something easier.

Race 6: Class 5 (2) 1,700m

1 Silent Wind ** Sand form is excellent but will have to jump from extreme outside gate which will make winning extremely difficult.
D’Mighty Kingdom  *** Another with terrific sand form of late and should run another bold race from the good barrier.
3 Daring Mellifont * Last two runs without blinkers have been good but sand form only fair and drawn badly tonight.
4 Colourland Star ** Look for improvement at second run back from spell and could provide excellent each-way value.
5 Eastern Sun    ** Good run at his last start in similar company suggest he will run well again but place looks best from awkward draw.
6 Cool Judgement   **  Always seems to have an excuse and likely to find another one this week from widish draw.
7 Magic Eight *** Should show plenty of cheek here and might prove very hard to run down in the concluding stages.
8 The Pilot  * Not for me.
West Eight * Last run was OK but this will be tougher and easy to ignore from bad gate.
10   Triple Aces  ** Always a hope in this type of race but remarkably still a maiden so place looks best option.
11 Triple Wonder Maxworthy has more chance of calling a runner “Triple Eight” in this race than this horse has of finishing better than last couple.
12 Good Performance **  Form doesn’t read well but expect a better performance tonight from the inside gate.
13 Leopard Strike EA1 **  OK run last time in and can consider for exotics.

Race 7: Class 5 1,100m

1 Asian Classic *** Drop in class coupled with some nice sand form and good barrier should get him over the line in this.
2 Prior Viscount * Also drops in class but not going well enough to overcome bad gate.
3 Superb Star  ** Will appreciate the class and honest enough to overcome bad gate and run a solid race.
4 King Of Victory  ** Last start was OK and should improve again from inside gate.
5 Super Express Prepared to overlook from widest alley.
6 World Top  *** Might need some luck in running from awkward draw but looks a chance in this after nice showing last time out.
7 Chin-Ho ** Forget last run in heavy going and expect a solid show here from good gate.
8 Diablo * No hope.
9 Lyman Hall * This doesn’t look suitable.
10 Midnight Hunter  *** Doesn’t look like there is a lot of winning chances in this race so not without a show if things go his way.
11 Trust ‘N’ Triumph *** Ten years old but honest as the day is long and could embarrass a few of the youngsters here.
12 Foxx ** Resuming and should be fresh enough to run an OK race.
13 Sapporo Beauty EA1 ** This doesn’t look suitable but also fresh and might pay to keep safe if she gets a run.
14 Cabana Bay EA2 ** Honest enough to include in exotic bets.
15 Royal Dancer EA3  *** Shouldn’t get a start but this type of race is suitable.

Race 8: Kranji Stakes A 1,100m

1 Why Be *** Well suited at the race conditions and would expect him to get back to his winning ways.
2 Breckenridge ** Goes extremely well on this surface but can’t beat Why Be at equal weights.
3 Capablanca ** Quality, but question mark over his ability on the alternate surface against proven sand speedsters.
4 Leon * Former Malaysian galloper only having second Kranji start and this is too tough.
5 Jaywin   * In career best form but hasn’t placed at three sand runs and prepared to leave out here.
6 Zinly  **  Versatile and honest so a must for exotics but can’t see him having a major impact.
7 Speed Ranger   * Former Malaysian galloper having Kranji debut and can’t recommend.
8 Coup Leader * Outside place at best.
9 Saint Arc * Battles away but shouldn’t play a part in this.
10  Future Baby  * Has dash but should be outclassed by a few here.

Race 9: Class 4 1,600m

Hadrian  ** Going along nicely in this type of race but wide draw looks to have put paid to his winning chances.
2 Huypircart   Having first start on this surface and prefer to just watch from awkward gate.
3 Titan Fun   * Not at his best at the moment and hard to consider.
4 Golden Hawk  ** Should improve with each run back from long layoff but bad draw makes it very difficult and might just pay to watch him today.
5 How Can Stop ** While only having just his second run back from long lay-off he could run a surprise race from inside gate and will pay to respect.
6 Veeandvee ***  Blinkers back off and should be a huge show here from an inside gate.
7 Double Happiness * Best of the rest at his last start and another midfield finish looks likely in this.
8 Equator ** Has enough early pace to get a good position and that could be enough to see him finish top three here.
9 Resourceful  * Had excuses at debut but this looks tough and better to wait.
10 New Leader ** Going along OK, and not without hope, but bad gate makes place best option.
11 Raging Bull * Had excuses when never on the track last time in similar company, but still not for me in this.
12 Valiant Master * Don’t like from wide gate and really needs something easier than this.
13  D’Mighty Kop EA1 * Should struggle in this class.
14  Delbury EA2  * Not for me.

Fujii aims to bow out a winner as love beckons

Michael Lee    Singapore Turf Club

Japanese jockey Kanichiro “Joe” Fujii is planning to have the perfect send-off at his farewell Kranji meeting on Friday.

After deciding not to renew his rider’s licence, the amiable rider, who flies back to Japan next Wednesday to be reunited with girlfriend Saori, is hoping to improve his current score of 12 wins from his book of six rides.

“Javelin is my best chance, I would say,” said the 23-year-old who served his apprenticeship in Sydney. “He’s the most experienced runner in that Maiden race and he was only beaten half-a-length at his last start.”

Fujii has picked up another two rides (Premier Night and Prior Viscount) from compatriot Hideyuki Takaoka – by far his staunchest supporter during his eight-month stay in Singapore, with nine of his dozen of wins hailing from that yard.

Fujii's latest win came on August 4 aboard American-bred Sporting Chance.

“Premier Night is also in good form and with only 53kgs on his back, I expect him to run well,” added Fujii, who has also been engaged by three other trainers – Desmond Koh (Kakurei), Sam Chua (Zinly) and Laurie Laxon (Titan Fun).

“I don’t ride for Laurie that often but I do ride some of his horses in trackwork,” said Fujii. “When I told him that Friday was my last day, he promised to give me a ride – and he did!”

Fujii, who ranks Trigger Express’ win in the Group 3 Chairman’s Trophy as his most memorable achievement, however heads home with bittersweet feelings.

“My application for a jockey’s licence was turned down by the racing authorities in Japan. I’m very disappointed as I had already secured a three-month contract with a Tokyo trainer,” said Fujii.

But though he won’t be riding down a home straight on a raceday in Japan just yet, Fujii is all set to walk down the aisle by the end of the year.

“That’s the main reason I decided not to stay in Singapore. I promised my girlfriend we would start living together before we get married in three months’ time,” he said.

Luckily for him, Fujii’s Hokkaido-based future in-laws went beyond just giving away their daughter.

“Saori’s father knows Mr Katsumi Yoshida from Northern Farm, which races Delta Blues and Pop Rock (last year’s Melbourne Cup 1-2). He spoke with Mr Yoshida and I will ride trackwork there for the next three months.”

After he ties the knot, Fujii said that he would like to return to Australia early next year.

“I’ve ridden in Sydney with lots of success. I’ve already spoken to my agent Adam and there should not be any problem for me to ride there again,” said Fujii who also subscribes to the motto “have horses will travel”.

Also in his long-term plans are countries like South Korea and France, where he recently rode trackwork for French trainer Criquette Head, while visiting his sister in Lyon during the one-week break at Kranji.

“But I had such a good time in Singapore and would definitely like to come back here – maybe in a couple of years.”
