Even had Des Scahill slightly raising his voice at the end of the call.

Smash blows away rivals

I was surprised he won so easily but knew we were coming with a good horse,. We thought if there wasn't a real smart one there we expected to win. Kevin was very impressed. He was kind of a late developer and had a bit of a hold up with a nasal discharge a month ago. I didn't think he'd be back so soon but when it cleared up he indicated he was ready to go. He could go up to a mile and he has a great temperament.

Smash Williamsmade a big impression on his debut in the six-furlong maiden at the Curragh when sprinting away from his rivals in blistering style.

The Jim Bolger-trained debutant was produced to lead a furlong-and-a-half out by Kevin Manning.

The son of Fracas powered clear inside the final furlong to post a six-and-a-half length victory at odds of 7/1.

Indrahar edged the runner-up spot from well backed debutant Moral High Ground who was sent off 4/1 favourite having been 20/1 in the morning.

"I was surprised he won so easily but knew we were coming with a good horse," said Bolger.

"We thought if there wasn't a real smart one there we expected to win. Kevin was very impressed.

"He was kind of a late developer and had a bit of a hold up with a nasal discharge a month ago.

"I didn't think he'd be back so soon but when it cleared up he indicated he was ready to go.

"He could go up to a mile and he has a great temperament."

Plenty of 13/8 and 6/4 on offer.

Started 6/5 and won smoothly from all reports.

I say from all reports because I haven't seen it. I set the recorder to Sky 1, which according to the programme, was showing the Curragh. However, I discovered this morning when I attempted to watch a replay that Sky 1 was not showing the Curragh.

I am grateful that we are able to see races from all over the world these days, but I do find Sky's regular programming mistakes very annoying.

Super hot race.

Great lead up to the Commonwealth Cup.

What a super race that is shaping up to be.

The stable's not been in form, but I might just play up some of my Japan Derby winnings on Smash.

Probably fair to say that Smash Williams no longer has that WOW factor.

Hard to see him playing much part in anything at Group level this term.

I am not giving up on him. As you said the Bolger team is out of sorts and Smash Williams was beaten by those around him who are far fitter at this stage.

The filly got away from the field, the favourite was the only one to go out after her and Smash Williams stayed on at the one pace with the other bunch.

But yes he has lost that wow factor for the moment.  :/

Resumes in a pretty slick Gladness Stakes at Naas this evening.

Something was clearly not right with him last term, as he was put away after just the one, very plain, race.

Suffered a sever bout of ringworm last year, apparently affected the majority of the Bolger yard.

I suspect ( hope  ) he comes on alot for last nights showing.
