The highest priced 2yo is getting set to race in Saratoga, NY in the next 3 weeks or so.  Trained by Todd Pletcher, The Green Monkey was purchased for $16million last year.

His breeding isn't even close to matching his price tag. Would have to win a significant Gr1 to have a hope of getting the 16 mill back.

I can't remember the full story , but wasn't it only a 1 furlong dash or something ?

If so he maybe a very expensive Quarter horse ... lol

No he hasn't, but if he condescends to clamber down from his tree they will press ahead with plans to run him over 1400m - 1600m once they find a suitable (ie winnable ;)) race for him.

"Everybody wants to see what $16 million can buy you. He was very good, very professional, he's just not very quick." Jockey John Velazquez.

I wonder how many people stood in line to bag Makybe Diva after her first couple of runs.Tony Santic is laughing all the way to the bank now! It's only a baby - give it a chance  ;)

Makybe Diva won six out of her first seven. Not too many laughing at Mr Santic there and she was one of the biggest blackbookers ever as "future Melbourne Cup winner". She also cost many millions less than US$16M.

And another name that deserves a mention next to The Green Monkey is JALIL. Mind you that US9.7M son of Storm Cat has at least won a race. That was a Class 5 Maiden and connections are only down US$9,690,000 now.  :look:

If I had that sort of money I would not be buying a horse (well perhaps a tiny pony the Slades could manage for me  :D) I would be buying a large farmhouse in Italy on a big hill, with a pool and an olive grove and I'd retire there and write scripts for a living  :D Oh dreamsssssssssssssssssssss  ::)

John Magnier and JP McManus retired The Green Monkey to stud in Florida yesterday, where he will begin to cover mares in February next year. His fee has yet to be set, but with career earnings so far of just $10,000, he needs to generate another $15,990,000 simply to break even on his purchase price.

Hope The Green Monkey has a couple of really good crops, that way they might actually regain some of the money.  Shows the wisdom in buying the lower priced yearlings doesn't it??

The Baize Chimp is only getting anywhere near a stud because he cost so much in the first place. He'll get a chance but it wont be for long unless miracle foals appear.

The other gazillionaire I mentioned on this thread JALIL is actually making a name for himself on dirt during the current Dubai season. There's hope for him yet as he heads towards the US later in the year.
