Jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester has told the harrowing story of how he was held at knifepoint and had his Mercedes-Benz stolen on his way to trackwork at the Gold Coast on Thursday morning.

The promising jockey was left shaken by the ordeal but luckily escaped without injury, leaving him thankful to be able to tell the tale.

Police are still on the hunt for his white Mercedes-Benz coupe which has “JAGGC” personalised plates.

“I was on my way to trackwork at 3.30 this morning and I stepped into Main Beach to get a coffee,” he said.

“I went to the 7-Eleven on Main Beach Parade to get it and then I went to Narrowneck Beach on the eastern side of the esplanade to drink it, I was only there for five minutes having a scroll on my phone.

“My car was still running and there was no one around at all and then out of nowhere I noticed a guy in a tracksuit set with his face covered on the footpath near my car.

“I wound my window up and thought the car was locked and before I had time to think he punched the driver’s window and made this huge crack.

“That was when I realised what was going on and I’m looking at the male who is in my drivers window, I tried to put my car in drive to drive off quickly but before I had time to do it, the door was opened and he leant in the car and had a knife pointed at me.”

The 22-year-old, who booted home a double at Doomben on Saturday, was left without his phone and wallet which was left behind in the car following the ordeal.

“I saw a car about 100m down parked with its lights on so I thought ‘how good is this, there is someone who can help me’,” he said.

“As I approached it a man jumped out of that car with a suspicious look as well and walked towards me.

“I kept my distance and then he yelled out saying ‘what do you want mate?’ and I said everything that just happened and he replied saying ‘do you have a mobile phone on you?’ I said no because it’s in the car so he kept saying ‘well keep f---ing running c---’.”

The brazen thieves are unlikely to get far with the car however with Guthmann-Chester saying he had the car key in his back pocket the whole time.

While they were able to drive off, they will be unable to start the car again without it.

Mercedes-Benz is also assisting police in tracking the vehicle.

Guthmann-Chester says he will continue with his riding commitments at Ipswich on Friday along with the Gold Coast on Saturday.

JOCKEY’S CAR THEFT ENDS WITH ARREST
LUKE MORTIMER
POLICE have charged an Ipswich man with armed robbery and various other offences after he allegedly carjacked a jockey’s luxury car at knifepoint on the Gold Coast.

Jag Guthmann-Chester, 22, alleged he had his white Mercedes-Benz coupe stolen at Main Beach while heading to the track about 3.30am last Thursday.

A Gold Coast police spokesman said the Mercedes was then found “in a business carpark” on Southport Nerang Rd on Friday morning.

Mr Guthmann-Chester said he was drinking a coffee in his car at Narrowneck Beach on August 12 when “out of nowhere I noticed a guy in a tracksuit with his face covered”.

“I wound my window up and thought the car was locked and before I had time to think he punched the driver’s window and made this huge crack,” Mr Guthmann-Chester said. The man “leant in the car and had a knife pointed at me”, he said.

On Monday, police said a Rosewood man, 33, had been arrested and charged with one count each of armed robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a driver licence (repeat offender).

He was expected to face Southport Magistrates Court on September 2.

That was quick and the car is apparently undamaged .

What about the "Samaritan"?

“I kept my distance and then he yelled out saying ‘what do you want mate?’ and I said everything that just happened and he replied saying ‘do you have a mobile phone on you?’ I said no because it’s in the car so he kept saying ‘well keep f---ing running c---’.”

Was he part of the robbery or was he someone like me who likes to keep to himself

Jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester is looking to land the biggest win of his career on Friday, just two weeks after a frightening carjacking which saw him held at knifepoint while his car was stolen.

The Gold Coast-based hoop will ride the Jonny Field-trained Tramonto in the Listed Goldmarket on Friday where he will race against Group 1 winner Alligator Blood.

Alligator Blood’s presence in the race however has Guthmann-Chester in a race against time to shed some extra kilos to make the ride at 55kg after stewards permitted him to ride 1kg overweight in the feature race.

The former champion apprentice said he is still getting over the carjacking which saw brazen thugs pull a knife on him while he was getting a morning coffee on the way to trackwork.

“It is all good now, I got the car back 24 hours later when it was found in one piece with no damage so that’s a plus,” he said.

“I was definitely shaken up for a few days, during the days I was fine, just during the nights and early mornings going to trackwork you’re thinking about it a bit.

“There was a bit of anxiety thinking it could happen again but each day that goes on I am getting better and dealing with it, hopefully I can forget about it and move on shortly.

“The first couple of days I didn’t stop for a coffee but then I didn’t like going to trackwork without one so I stopped in to get one but it was straight back to the car and making sure the doors were locked with no stopping.”

Jockey Turns to Boxing

A win in the Goldmarket would be the biggest in his career, with Guthmann-Chester only previously winning the 2020 Eye Liner Stakes on Bandipur.

In consultation with Guthmann-Chester, Field elected to take Tramonto to the Gold Coast over a Class 6 option at Doomben on Saturday in order to properly test his promising gelding who he would like to take to Sydney.

After riding at 56.5kg on Wednesday at Ipswich, Guthmann-Chester will have to waste again in order to reach 55kg, a task he is all too familiar with, however he is thankful for the added kilogram allowance.

“One kilo does make a big difference for me, 55kg is tough but 54kg is just overboard,” he said.

“I can get to 55kg without killing myself but that extra kilo to get down I overdo it.

“It takes a big week to ride at 54kg, it takes a whole week of preparation and you are very dehydrated.

“It comes down to preparation, the more training I am doing, the better I will feel when I get down to it so whether it is boxing, swimming or running, I try and do a lot of it early in the week leading up to.”

Tramonto is rated a $11 chance with TAB, while he was $8 in Saturday’s Class 6 at Doomben against odds-on favourite Weona Smartone.
