DEVILS AFLEET EDGES STABLEMATE IN SPRINT FEATURE AT GOLDEN GATE FIELDS
The 5-year-old gelding Devils Afleet edged ahead of stablemate Prairie City Road in the final strides to win the $40,580 sprint feature at Golden Gate Fields Thursday.
Devils Afleet defeated Prairie City Road by a neck as trainer Lloyd Mason saddled the exacta in the six-furlong contest for older horses. Ridden by Kayla Stra, Devils Afleet was timed in 1:09.62 and paid $27.80 after being dismissed at 12-to-1 in the wagering.
Devils Afleet, owned by Edward and Theresa DeNike, was making his first start of the year after going 1-for-7 with four seconds in 2009. The victory was Devils Afleetís sixth in 21 career starts and the $22,800 payday boosted his earnings to $214,540.
Prairie City Road, who finished three-quarters of a length in front of third-place finisher Jiggly, was making his first start since Aug. 22 and ran a big race in defeat.
A very consistent and lightly raced 5-year-old horse, Prairie City Road has three wins, four seconds a third in eight career starts.
Paulís Hope, the 6-to-5 favorite ridden by Frank Alvarado, never threatened and checked in last in the field of six.
