Brisbane's Racing RadioTAB has reported that after 10 months, and 50 winners, in Macau, Larry Cassidy is returning home to Sydney.

He rode his 2000th career winner while in Macau, and he is confident he can quickly get back to prominence in Sydney.

Can't get a ride with the small fields and no backing from a major stable in Sydney, Racenet reports that he's headed to Brisbane to do his riding.  Wonder why not Melbourne

Westie it might have something to do with his wife having family up here.

He will be welcomed up here.  Colless and co need some genuine competition to keep them on their toes.

Larry has always ridden well up here at carnival time and  he has had support from local trainers in the past
Provided he works hards and doesn't expect to many favours up here he should go well.
I suppose he can still carnival hop during the group races but use Brisbane as his base.

Good luck to him...hope he goes well.

Talking to someone the other day who concentrates on Brisbane alone he stated if a jock with any sort of ability came up to Qld they would clean up.

Larry may just make it interesting.

Thanks,
Larrys moving there to win the premiership next season and a few of the leading trainers suggested he talk to me.
I was happy to hear that and look forward to our association.

Update on L Cassidy,
Larry's been riding work in Brisbane over the last week and had a pipe opener this morning with 6 barrier trials.
His first day of riding under my care will be EF Saturday where at the moment he has a full book of 8 rides.
Sunshine Coast Sunday 5 rides and Doomben Monday 6 rides.
                                                                                                 Cheers Gallopers.

By Glenn Davis

Ex-Sydney jockey Larry Cassidy has received a flood of ride offers for the Australia Day weekend.
Former Sydney jockey Larry Cassidy has been rushed with offers over the Australia Day weekend as he begins a new chapter in his riding career in Queensland.

Cassidy, 38, has a full book of eight rides including Newcastle mare Ugly Betty in the Listed Cadell-Garrick Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday and six early rides for the Australia Day meeting at Doomben on Monday.

In between, Cassidy will travel to Caloundra on Sunday where he has five early rides.

Cassidy rode trackwork at Eagle Farm last Saturday and again on Monday and Tuesday before six rides in Tuesday's Doomben barrier trials.

"I rode a winner in the trials and I'm looking forward to starting at Eagle Farm this Saturday," Cassidy said.

"My weight is down to 53 kilos after I lost two kilos riding today. I feel good but I do feel the heat a bit."

Cassidy, who has won 40 Group One races, recently quit Sydney racing where small field sizes and lack of opportunities forced him to move.

"It was just too difficult in Sydney. All the main stables have stable riders and even second riders," Cassidy said.

"I used to ride a lot for John Hawkes when he was at Crown Lodge and I was associated with Gai Waterhouse for a while but it's incredibly difficult there now."

Cassidy, whose wife Michelle and two children, Luke, 11, and five-year-old Jade plan to move permanently to Brisbane in April, is looking forward to his new Brisbane venture.

"I would have ridden at Eagle Farm last Saturday and ridden Ugly Betty but I wasn't organised in time," he said.

The Kris Lees-trained Ugly Betty scored a resounding win for jockey Brad Pengelly in a 1200-metre race at Eagle Farm last Saturday.

"It's a step-up to a Listed race for Ugly Betty but she won well enough last time to show she's worthy of a chance again," Cassidy said.

Cassidy, who has rejected overtures to ride permanently for Gold Coast trainer Gillian Heinrich, has set himself a goal to win next season's Brisbane jockeys' premiership.

"I spoke to Gillian about riding for her when I was at the Magic Millions but I've decided to ride freelance," he said.

"But after I settle in I'll go to the Gold Coast to ride work once a week."

Cassidy has been given no guarantees from Brisbane trainers but is certain to be in strong demand from Eagle Farm's leading trainers Barry Baldwin, Rob Heathcote and Liam Birchley.

Gallopers I don't reckon it will be too hard for you to get him mounts, A mate who concentrates on Brissy races said a couple of months ago that any jock with decent ability that moved to Brissy would kill it.

I wish him well and look forward to seeing him display his talents, especially with stayers.
As good a book of rides as he has on paper I'd say it will take him a few rides to work out the pace of our races up here.

I'd imagine he would like to kick off his "new career" up here with a couple of winners to give his confindence a boost.

A few of the locals may have their noses out of joint but it might also smarten a couple of them up.

Anyone game to predict his first winner up here?

Larry Cassidy, Kris Lees see beauty in Ugly Betty

By Tony Meany, courier mail http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/author/0,23829,5000550-5003415,00.html
January 22, 2009 11:00pm

HISTORY may repeat itself if Ugly Betty can provide a fairytale result for Larry Cassidy when he begins his Queensland riding career at Eagle Farm tomorrow.

When Cassidy first came to Australia from NZ, the late Max Lees provided him with his first Group 1 win on Coronation Day, which won the George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in 1992.

Lee's son, Kris, gets the chance to give Cassidy the ideal kick-start to his full-time riding career in Queensland on last week's impressive winner Ugly Betty.

Ugly Betty steps up to listed grade in the $100,000 Cadell-Garrick (1200m) and Lees's main concern is whether Cassidy can overcome gate nine.

"I have not backed her up in a race before but I don't think that will be a concern because she has done very well," Lees said.

"She gets in the race well because she is still a restricted class horse.

"I thought I would give her a try in listed company and after this run she will have a break.

"I'll bring her back to Newcastle because there are no races to suit her up there for a while."

Cassidy, 38, has won 40 Group 1 races and headed the Sydney premiership three times, but he knows the importance of a good start in Brisbane.

Ugly Betty has been staying with Mel Eggleston on the Gold Coast and could not have been more impressive in winning last week.

Lees prepares champion filly Samantha Miss, which is due to make a comeback in three weeks and is progressing well.

Deagon trainer Pat Duff is confident Desdemona will race well but said Ugly Betty looked well placed in the race.

"I am hoping Ugly Betty does not back up because she was impressive," Duff said.

"Having said that, my mare carries weight well and has drawn perfectly in gate two with Glen Colless to ride.

"Desdemona has been very consistent and I am confident she will run well."

Topweight Quizzical Lady is starting to find her old form says trainer Bruce Hill, but he is concerned about the 11 gate and the 58kg, along with the prospect of a wet track. "It does not make things easier," Hill said. "Both Quizzical Lady and Calchris are small horses and find it hard to carry big weights.

"That was why I decided to race Calchris at the Sunshine Coast last Sunday because she dropped so much in weight."

Key Bar Nights may be the key to the pace in the race because Bruce and Jason McLachlan have decided to put blinkers on
