I have read a couple of the stories about Thommo, but one thing is missing ... the sheer enormity of his average.
For example - how many winners in a year does the annual Premier jockey need, to be the Premier Jockey in respective states/provinces?
I haven't looked too far back, but if someone could find a table that shows the listings of premier jockeys over the years, I'd be grateful.
In recent lists, Robert had averaged a S/R around 18%, and is usually in the top 6 for the year - particularly country of course.
He doesn't appear in many metro lists, because it measures numerical wins, not S/R.
But if Thompson comes to town to ride, you'd better not discount his mount. If he has just the one ride ... it'll usually be for the win.
I doubt there would be many trainers who would pass up having him ride for them when their horse is peaking.
Effectively, in his career he has achieved the equivalent of riding into the premiership top half dozen list, every year for 40 years!!
Outstanding and unbelievable really.
Robert Thompson - you've seen 'em all come and go, mate - from:
Harry White ... and when making such a list, the danger is in leaving out more good ones than you include.
I'd be happy to put Robert Thompson up there alongside the greats, if for no other reason that his consistent record.
Well done Thommo!
