Weight penalty makes Winx too late for Melbourne Cup tilt

Racing Victoria’s senior handicapper Greg Carpenter says he would give Winx as much weight if not more than Makybe Diva was asked to carry in her third Melbourne Cup in 2005 if the current champion mare were nominated for this year’s 3200m handicap.

“She’s the best turf horse in the world so she would have to get top weight,” Carpenter said of the hypothetical scenario. “When the original weights are released, the top weight must have 58kg. Winx would get between 58kg and 60kg.”

Makybe Diva carried 51.5kg in 2003, 55.5kg in 2004 and 58kg in 2005. She won the Cox Plate in 2005 but could not be rehandicapped for the weight-for-age win.

One of the most asked questions offered by those with little or no knowledge with any champion is will they run in the Melbourne Cup?

The answer generally revolves around the handicap allotted and the ability to run out the distance, especially under the impost.

Trainer Chris Waller is in no doubt that a Melbourne Cup was within reach of Winx, but in 2015. She would have been handicapped as a Queensland Oaks winner, just two wins into her current sequence of 17.

Winx would have been around the 52kg mark, give or take a kilo. The $6.2 million race would surely have been at her mercy.

“She could (win the Cup) for sure but does she need to? We seem to know her right distance range,” Waller said.

“Maybe we missed out on a Melbourne Cup earlier in her career when she would have had a lesser weight. Now she’s basically going to carry the grandstand.”

Even in a hypothetical Greg Carpenter struggles to give horses their proper weight.

Winx, whose benchmark handicap has not risen from 132 for god knows how long should get 64.5 kgs if the template and handicap rating is to mean anything. Why have the bloody thing if it is meaningless ?
