3 New Year's Eve meetings in NSW today.

I have 5 picked out. Three "best bets" and two "value bets":

Best Bets

Nowra R2 #13 You Make Me Smile - Was trained by Steven O'Dea and had one run for a 7th to the well performed Cellargirl then put out. Has returned after 407 days and now with Jason Coyle. Won a barrier trial at Gosford with it's ears pricked and this is a very easy maiden. $3.50

Nowra Race 7 #14 Weaving Magic - John Sargent taking this horse to Nowra for it's 2nd race start. On debut struck a strong maiden at Hawkesbury and ran well. Drawn the rails and should be on the pace in a very weak race. $4.20

Gilgandra R2 #5 Tropicana Lass - From the leading stable of the N-W sat 3 deep the entire race on debut at Warren and she still bolted in. $1.65

Value Bets

Nowra Race 3 #3 Fantasy Belle. Has drawn the rails and never ever runs a bad race with similar weights. Race is fairly open. $14

Gilgandra R1 #7 Bold Rules - has returned from a 37 week maiden to put in two performances that give it a chance in a very weak maiden. $23

Fantasy Belle gets up at $21

You Make Me Smile won earlier but alas Tropicana Lass found one better.

Bold Rules 4th at $23.

I had that last one at Nowra going for 4 figures...sat in behind a $151 shot and a $50 shot and might have won with a clear run at them - held up a couple of times

Taree 4th January - assume track no worse than Soft 5

R1 - #2 Bowies Gift. Not beaten far by Wooshka and subsequent city placegetters Stella Victoria and Mascot. This is lengths below in class. Barrier a big worry though. High chance it will be caught deep. #1 and #10 for exotics

R2 - #1, #2, #3 and #7 look the only chances

R3 - #3 Our Brother George finished like Bernborough on debut to score at track and distance. Strikes a very poor Class 1 and only needs luck in running and should finish over the top of them. Early odds of $4.00 taken

R4 - #12 I Am Awesome, #9 Fumaroles and #4 Natural Predator meet again after a close encounter last start. #12 drops 4kg, #9 drops 0.5kg and #4 goes up 3 kg. #12 has also drawn the rails and liked the way he finished off last start and is only his 3rd start in a race where a lot of these have had their chances.

R5 - #8 Merriwa is drawn to run well in this.

R6 - #3 Kopite has never missed a place at the track or at the T&D. Drawn to get a gun run. Running against the likes of black type horse Pecans recently which is better than this.

R7 - #1 and #4 to lead with #5 Syrah with a nice sit behind them. May even run the trifecta

BEST: R1, R3, R4 and R6 parlay

Hammoon Bridge in the last is 4 placings from 5 starts at the track and won over the mile three starts back and the $18 appeals each way from a good draw.

Aqua Divina winning the first at Randwick meant that Auerbach was a living certainty in the first at Wyong.

Gets up by a short head

Chad Lever back and had to throw everything at him to get him home.

Our mate Awesome Pluck goes around in the Highway with Bowman up. Currently $1.60.

Showcase meeting at Moruya on Monday. Used to go down there once per year and run in their annual fun run along the northern banks of the Moruya River. Nice flat 10k run on a Sunday morning alongside the river. Nothing like it

In R4 #8 High Potential had it's debut run at the track over 1300m and I actually thought it was checked a little toward the end of the race and would have finished a lot closer otherwise. $23 early in a race that is weak.

R8 #7 Foxdell doesn't look like much opposition has shown up but he draw (9) is a little bit tricky.

R1 #5 Twirling Moss won his only start over the track and distance sitting 3 deep the entire race and has drawn barrier 4 in the Class 1.

He called High Potential running 3rd. It ran 3rd according to my television. But it ran 4th  :what:

Reckon it would have won if it was sweeping with the others instead of being on the rail

There is a horse in the last at Cessnock today that I have taken the early odds ($2.15 with a boost) called #3 Testaview that won like Winx last start and the only possible other chance I would possibly entertain as a chance is the Kim Waugh horse #4 White Boots (yes I checked and it has a big white blaze and four long white socks).

Up at Kempsey the bookies have posted one of Kris Lees at $1.22 in the 3rd race, #2 Notting Hill, which I think is outrageous given that #1 Dad's Army has been up there in this class - granted the rest are hopeless.

And he has one other for the day in race 6 #8 Jayzou which has won one race from 31 starts and the $5 seems very poor value.

I had a horse blackbooked from last winter - Anna's Joy.

Very fast and has won two of her 3 starts. Went for a spell and not sighted since August. Was thinking she would be a good country sprinter.

Blow me down there she is resuming at Warwick Farm tomorrow over 1000m in the 3rd! The fact they have brought her to the city to resume implies she must be doing OK?

Was a good city debut to hold on for 2nd after being in a 3 way speed battle most of the race.

She goes around in stronger class over 1100m in the last at Rosehill tomorrow but drops 2 kg. Winona Costin is an excellent engagement  :)

If there is no speed battle I reckon she might stick. $11 each way you can get tonight.

My notes for Grafton

Grafton 28th January

Race 1

#4 She's Choosie flew home in her win at Coffs over the 810m. The 1000m should suit and the two she ran past in that race should be covered here. She drops 1 kg. Some unraced ones who went well in the trials but we'll stick with the raced ones.

4-5-9-3

Race 2

#5 Elite Dubleo ran 2nd in a feature sprint at Coffs last start and looks to be in the best form of these. Query on the ex Victorian #6 Stormcraft first up who has trialled well for the Kelly stable. It actually started it's career in Grafton with a maiden win and ran some nice races in Brisbane. Sent to Darren Weir now back with Kelly. If #2 Prince Of The Turf is anywhere near fit he could win this. Don't like the favourite at he odds but it has some chance.

5-6-2-7

Race 3

I reckon if you took the best run of all the 16 runners they would all rate a chance in this race. Extremely tough. Forced to pick one I would chance #4 Mustaknown at the $16 and hope the barrier doesn't ruin it's chances. Resumed last time for a 2nd in a strong maiden at the winter carnival. #3 Longta similarly has good first up form as has #2 Kijito but another drawn off the track. It occurs to me that a good strategy might be to have a couple of bucks each way on the four outsiders at post time.

4-3-2 with zero confidence.

Race 4

#12 Golden Words rarely runs a bad race and has drawn 2. Drops 4 kg on it's strong win at Kempsey last start and I don't think this is that much harder. #2 Qabla is also drawn well and go on the win at Calouindra two starts back.

12-2-1-7

Race 5

#6 Dream Wilder from the Dunn stable looks one of the best of the day going on two Doomben placings before a failure in open 3yo city company. Drawn 1 and will get a nice sit. Similarly #14 Terrofilo has the city form and will appreciate the drop in class. #2 Toucan and #1 My Luck Eagle rate equally on their race two starts back and both horses have performed well subsequently.

6-14-2-1

Race 6

There are 4 horses in this race whose form stands out.

#1 Alot Like Home has only missed a place once and has 4 wins either side of a creditable 5th in a highway at Randwick. The only thing I don't like is that it will carry the full 61 kg and it has never carried that much weight but he is a big strong horse. Drawn the rails

#11 Humility is 4th run back and was a much improved 4th at Coffs last start. Drops 6.5 kg on that run. Last campaing ran some good races in Sydney. Drawn well.

#6 Pleased is 2nd up and has strong Doomben form. Drawn poorly in 13 so will go back and can run on as it did when it won over a mile at Doomben. Drops 1 kg on last start 7th in town.

#4 Not Wanted is a 9yo but ran 4th in the feature sprint at Coffs last start. Rises 4 kg on that run but has won with big weights in the past. Drawn 2.

1-11-6-4

Race 7

#4 Miss Parkin ran out of puff at the 150m mark first up. Is unbeaten at the track and was thought highly enough to have a race in Sydney last campaign.

#9 General Nelson, #8 Dexter Dutton and #14 Vivid Image all rate equally from the Star Of Harada race at Ballina and look a chance in this.

#12 Leica Celebre is not without a chance

4-14-9-8-12

Best Bets

R4 #12
R5 #6

Best Quinella and Trifecta

R2 Box 2-5-6-7

Early Money

R2 #2 Prince Of The Turf - interesting move that one.  Doesn't normally go well first up but has the form to win this.
R4 #12 Golden Words - selected
R6 #1 Alot Like Home - opened $2.30 now $1.75 - selected
R7 #10 Typhoon Bunny - goes up 3.5 kg on a narrow Class 1 win at Kempsey but drawn well and lightly raced.

If anyone would like to go on the mailing list for my NSW country summaries please drop me a PM. Send them out to friends when time permits.

First winnr at Goulburn today at prohibitive odds.

Trained by Gai. Riddent by Ms. K Mallyon  :what:

Is she up here riding for Gai just today or is it more permanent? Rachel King on the other shorties of Gais in Race 5.

Steve O'Dea has travelled down to Grafton today with a few horses and I reckon he can go home with at least one winner possibly more.

R3 #14 Setoka - first up but has had 2 trials and best form would just about win this. Drawn OK in 8.
R4 #5 Beau Dancer - almost identical comments apply but has a tricky draw out in 13
R6 #7 Mirabla - 3rd run back stepping up to the mile but has been a Class 1 horse for a while now. Well drawn and definitely in the mix.
R9 #2 Makes You Think - Won it's only start overcoming a slow start and a bit of traffic but up in grade so there is a bit of blind faith in taking the $2.70

Paul Hammersley riding all four.

Matt Dunn has entered a big team and would be surprised if he doesn't win a race or two on the 10 race card.

Quirindi Cup tomorrow with a feature 2yo race called the River Ridge Hcp as well as the Lightning (not the Flemington version).

I went for Red Knot in the Cup but it is a tough race. John Thompson's horse Makeadane is favourite and will be hard to beat.

Armidale horse Prada Miss resumes in the 1100m Lightning and while it is probably a little short of her best distance she is by far and away the classiest horse in the race being placed at Listed level at Doomben behind Candika. Akasaki has good city form and the Denham horse Skylimit resumes with a solid 5:2-2 record first up.

In the River Ridge Foxy's Foxinator ran 2nd to undoubtedly the best country 2yo this year (She's Choosie) on debut and looks in very light with 2.5 kg over the limit but the $1.60 price is too skinny for me in a 2yo race. Will end up like The Fireman backing those.

Paul Perry's unraced Jamaican Dream ran a very nice 2nd to Oxford Tycoon in a trial and that horse came out on debut and was placed in the listed Lonhro Plate in town so if the trial from holds up that would make the $6.50 on offer look good each way value.

Showcase meeting that has 3 features and trainers from Queensland and Sydney have sent horses there and one of the best quality country meetings I've seen in that region for a while.

Interesting Paul Messara is (kind of) back training.

Should win that race but a little red flag on the weight he is being asked to carry under the handicap conditions - he hasn't carried that weight before.

$1.80 is a bit skinny for me.

I actually tipped one that is $51 - #3 Star Of Tickets (and had a couple of dollars on it).

The reason being it ran last in a trial, then debuted with a horrible run. Went for a year long spell and came back and won a trial with a lugging bit and looked to me like it was capable of further improvement. Wide barrier probably suits as it will get back and Quirindi is a long straight and if there is a bit of speed on up front you never know. But agree the toppie has the form on the board.

What about Jamaican Dream mate. Had a good win on that and got $7 to boot

Geez either the caller is in a poor position at Quirindi or something else. Several races yesterday, like Jamaican Dream's race, wasn't being put into the picture until right at the end of the race.  :what:
