Iconic Birdsville to kick in for farmers

HISTORY will be made tomorrow and on Saturday when SKY Racing telecasts the Birdsville carnival for the first time in the iconic event’s 136-years, with the #BetOnBirdsville campaign kicking in for Australia’s drought-stricken farmers.

With the SKY, TAB and bookmaker coverage, Racing Queensland has pledged to donate 50 per cent of all wagering revenue from the event to the QCWA’s Drought Appeal.

Birdsville, 1600km west of Brisbane, will welcome up to 7000 people this weekend for “The Melbourne Cup of the Outback”.

“Australians love their horse racing and are known for lending a helping hand to their mates during times of need,” RQ’s general manager of racing (thoroughbred), Simon Stout, said.

“This campaign aims to combine both in support of our friends and colleagues in rural and regional Queensland.

“Clubs across Queensland have agreed to dedicate races to the #BetOnBirdsville campaign, with some participants forgoing a portion of their riding, driving or winning fees in aid of the cause.”

Stout highlighted that of the $1.2 billion racing contributes in economic value to the state each year, 47 per cent was realised in regional Queensland.

› THE Capalaba Greyhound Racing Club is set for a big Saturday afternoon with the Michael Miller Memorial Final and Paul Dolan Appreciation Day.

The committee has invited all of Dolan’s fans to witness his last call at the straight track, which will be the memorial final.

Dolan was the club’s primary caller and played a big part in helping manager Bernie Culey keep the club operational.

He left his post at Capalaba when the opportunity to become the primary caller at the Sunshine Coast gallops arose.

The racing action starts from noon and races of all codes from Queensland and interstate will be televised live.

Well the dust has settled, and most of the participants will be wending their weary homeward ways

A popular, and well deserved cup win by Billy Johnson's iron horse BLUE JEST

Blue Jest put the writing on the wall at his previous start by running second to (and fast taking ground off) Mackay's "Horse of the Year", Grand Emperor  . . so was great value at the 17.0

These bush horses are as tough as teak, and their connections are not far behind them

BJ the horse . . and BJ, the trainer have seen just about every track on the tough western circuits . . as well as coastal venues from Cairns to the Great(?) South-East where he ran third at Doomben

How many horses can boast to having won or placed from 1 000m to 2 000m in good company  . . winning $200K

AND . .

Winning the Birdsville Cup  :no1:
