It took the Gold Coast Turf Club’s new interim chief executive less than a day to act

Brad Davidson, Gold Coast Bulletin
July 18, 2016 12:00am

IT took the Gold Coast Turf Club’s new interim chief executive Richard Towson less than a day to make his mark after he stripped Marnie Ballard of the club’s general manager position.

Towson, who has replaced Dale St George at the helm after the former chief executive was sacked last Friday, told Ballard on Saturday morning that she was no longer the general manager of the club.

It comes after St George booted Towson from the general manager position in January and replaced him with Ballard, the former Moe Racing Club operations manager.

Ballard is now a member of the functions department.

Towson told the Bulletin a “full review” would be conducted at the club in the coming weeks.

“Everything is under review,” Towson said.

“We have to go right through everything whether it be the staff, the finances or the packages.

“It could take one week or three months and it just depends.

“All we have done at this point in time is say we don’t have a general manager and we are reviewing everything.”

Whether or not St George was the right man for the job, the current GCTC board and chairman Brett Cook must take some responsibility for his departure after just eight months at the club.

After all they picked St George ahead of a strong batch of candidates.

TIT for TAT on that PP......might result in industrial proceedings if it is alleged the demotion amounts to unfair treatment...which on the face of it appears to be the case.

Is it safe to assume Marnie is a female that'll add fuel to the fire.

Giddy Up

I reproduced that article with no comment.

In fact it would be nice to have comments from those with "local knowledge".

To the objective observer there are several interesting things in the article that require further explanation:

"It comes after St George booted Towson from the general manager position in January and replaced him with Ballard, the former Moe Racing Club operations manager."

So Towson was GM, and was removed from the position by St. George when he was made CEO. But now St. George has been removed from the position of CEO and replaced by Towson, What has gone on there to cause this change  :what: Were there changes at the board level or did the board have a change of heart?

Ballard is now a member of the functions department.

Ballard is no longer GM but is still working for the Gold Coast Turf Club? There is such a thing as a "functions department"  :what:

Is that functions as in operational functions, or functions as in charity functions? Is she happy with this change? If it is a demotion and she resigns is it a "deemed resignation"? (those unfamiliar with that term should look it up).

Whether or not St George was the right man for the job, the current GCTC board and chairman Brett Cook must take some responsibility for his departure after just eight months at the club.

I noted a lot of congratulations for "Cookie" recently but cannot recall why. Are the people who were doing the congratulating happy with the outcome? Are they happy with this article? It occurs to me that the article could appear to be taking one side in something that is divisive?

As I said, my reproduction of the Gold Coast Bulletin article is completely benign. I know none of the parties involved or the local politics for that matter. Would be interested in hearing of other people's views especially if they are counter to a view projected in Mr Davidson's article.

The ball is in the GCTC's court if they want to respond to Brad Davidson's story ...in the light of his comments... Whether or not St George was the right man for the job, the current GCTC board and chairman Brett Cook must take some responsibility for his departure after just eight months at the club.

The probability is the intimate details of this change in direction is not within the knowledge of rank and file members..... it's obvious it's Towson's turn to crack the whip....with the blessing of the Board you would think.

Giddy Up

From PP's observations....Is that functions as in operational functions, or functions as in charity functions? Is she happy with this change? If it is a demotion and she resigns is it a "deemed resignation"? (those unfamiliar with that term should look it up).

If the lady resented the demotion and resigned on account of it and sought advice as to her options it is more than likely she would be advised that on the face of it she would have a case to prosecute her claims on the grounds of "constructive dismissal "... a well known cause of action in industrial relations.

As has been commented before in regards to this Club. When you increase the power of elected officials they simply start to believe in their own omnipotence. This has already happened with every ones' mate "Cookie ". Fair dinkum if you were not already obsessed with your own presence then why would you seek to extend your stay in the first place. If your predecessors were able to find suitable replacements in the past then what extraordinary talents do you think the mighty one has bestowed on you that opined you to think that the place couldn't exist without your presence. Very , very silly move by the members.

Quite right. When "Cookie" volunteered his services for the Committee wasn't he aware of the time limits associated with this position. When did he get the premonition the joint would fall down without him.
