El Segundo may miss Aurie's Star on Saturday

By Rob Burnet     ThoroughBRED Racing

The Colin Little trained El Segundo may miss Saturday’s $100,000, listed, Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley after the star galloper was discovered to have a foot abscess at track work at Caulfield on Wednesday morning.

“It is a bit disappointing,” said Little.

“He is sore and could not work this morning. It is a bit ambitious to think he can gallop tomorrow.

“If he does not gallop tomorrow then I will not accept for the Aurie’s Star.

“He was going to run on Saturday, even with the big weight.

“We will have to look at where we will go, with the Liston next week the first preference.

“He might have a gallop at Moonee Valley on Saturday as he recovers from racing there quickly,” he said.

Little said that El Segundo, the winner of last season’s Group I Australian Cup and second in the Group I Tattersalls Cox Plate at Moonee Valley last year, has had foot problems in the past, but he was presently in better condition than previous campaigns.

“It is just the way it is with racehorses,” he said.

With the field in the Aurie’s Star restricted to 10 plus four emergencies there will be no shortage of replacement runners for El Segundo.

I'm going to throw in Miss Mooney Mooney and Jennings into my multiples, although the later probably won't get a start.

EL SEGUNDO

Been competitive first up throughout his career including a fine second to Bel Danoro (was then flying!) in this race last year at Flemington carrying 59.5.  Was a Group 2 winner at the Valley over this distance back in January at WFA before winning the Orr in dominant fashion.  Preperation seemed to go downhill from there and was dissapoiting in the Futurity and the Australian Cup when favourite.  62kg is a massive impost!

BLUTIGEROO

Only first up win was his Maiden at Geelong in 2004, and has been well held at the start of every prep since.  Since that first up win has not been within 2 lengths of the winner over this distance (and that performance was at Casino!).  One plus may be the track, where he has recorded a 6 length demolition job in a Country Cup race last winter.  Progressed from the Hobart Cup to win the BMW from nowhere in the Autumn.  A stayer with 60 kg - no!

CASUAL PASS

Has been fair without ever threatening a victory first up throughout his career, including a 6th in this race with 59kg last year.  Has been more than competitive over the 1200 though including a nice 3rd here to track specialists California Dane and Virage De Fortune (then going super!) in Group 2 WFA company back in Jan 2006.  Was just short of top class last Autumn when often found a few classier ones too good.  Hard to see winning first up with 60.

ANNENKOV

European import first up here for Peter Moody.  Ran 2nd in a barrier trial back in April.  No idea but willing to risk.

ORANGE COUNTY

Had shown moderate first up form before bolting over here over the 1200 in an Open Hcp going away to win by 3 back in March leaving Live In Vain (ran in Bletchingly) in his wake.  That confirmed his C&D specialty that was noted when taking a similar type race by 4 back in the Winter of 2005.  His March win and another dominant performance saw him start an $8 chance in the Goodwood but didn't come in the straight after settling near the back.  Certainly doesn't carry the imposts of the class horses just 0.5 above the limit.

JUDUSK

The first of those on the limit and was a winner over the C&D back in June beating handy types in Pin Prick and Our Apache.  Attempted to repeat that performance a fortnight later but was smashed finishing some 15 lengths adrift of the winner in second last place.  Was also impressive winning the Wangoom at the Warnambool carnival but that was against oppostion much inferior to this.  Is an 8yo and surely some of the younger ones have more appeal.

MONET RULES

On fire!  Blew away a Class 6 field at Sandown back in May then backed it up with a dominant 4 length win over rivals including Judusk over this course and distance in late June.  Trainer thought enough of him to throw her in against the likes of Red Dazzler and Maybe Better in Group 2 company last spring and down on the limit may be some lightweight chance.

ANY SUGGESTION

On his 4th in the Lightning and 2nd in the Australia Stakes both at Group 1 level at WFA behind Miss Andretti here in the Autumn - just wins.  Problem was, that was the case last week when easily held by the likes of Jennings (engaged here) in an open handicap.  The fact is he hasn't won since April 2006 when taking a listed event in Doomben.  Form has been atrocious since his Lightning run.  Would take a massive turn around to see him competitive.

I think it will be - but my biggest hint at this stage is that we best wait for the scratchings.  ;)

MISS MOONEY MOONEY

Specialist sprinter always competitive at this sort of distance range.  Is a listed winner at Morphetville and was placed in Group 3 company against her own sex at Caulfield as a 3yo back in 2004.  Her only run at the Valley to date was an outstanding second to track specialist Virage De Fortune in Group 2 company back in the spring of 2005.  Finished near the tail against potential superstar Lucky Secret LTO but was only beaten 4 lengths (although Stanzout [emg] beat her home).  Doesn't win out of turn but if everything went right wouldn't shock.

TEMPLE HILLS

Placed once from 3 first up efforts but that was back in NZ when a maiden.  Hasn't really threatened first up in Australia and was awful beaten over 20 lengths back in March.  Hasn't impressed over this sort of distance before and has never seen the Valley which is also of concern.  Safe to say went absolutely garbage last prep when beaten a collective 35 lengths in his 3 starts.  Would take a phenomenal turnaround to feature here.

DANEVER

Has an excellent first up record, winning at Sandown on debut, before two highly competitive efforts behind Haradasun (not here today!) at his next two preperations.  Was placed in Group 3 company over 1200m at Morphetville back in March 2006, and was 4th in the Vase behind Efficient at his only Moonee Valley run on his way to running 4th in the VRC Derby.  Coming off the 3yo classic season he certainly cannot be discounted, especially coming out of the Hayes camp.

JENNINGS

Bolted in here first up over the 1000m leaving rival Any Suggestion in his wake.  Has also won 2nd up here in the past but admittedly that was in 1MW company in 2005.  Two 2nd up efforts since may have been a bit dissapointing when well fancied in betting.  Has also generally struggled when stepping up from Open to Black type company over these type of differences.  Would have to have improved to be competitive in this class of race but first up effort suggests that may be the case.  Chance!

STANZOUT

Rated exceptionally first up when beaten only 1.3 lengths by potential superstart Lucky Secret.  This result is made even more significant by the fact that no other horse has been able to get within 2 lengths of him 2nd up during his career to date.  This included a 2 length demolition job of an open class field at Caulfield back in March over today's distance.  Of some concern is that he has yet to see Moonee Valley having only raced at Caulfield of all of the Metro tracks.  Was only 2.2 lengths away in a Group 3 company at Caulfield in April beating the likes of Recapitalize, Astrodame, Live In Vain, and Temple Hills.  On the limit here.  Yes!!!

ROANOKE

All 3 first up runs to date have been in Maiden company and has yet to place in any of them which does not bode well here.  Combine that with the fact that he is also unplaced from 5 goes at the 1200 and you can conclude that he might be struggling.  Oh and did I mention he has never seen the Valley?  Was a listed winner over 2400 at Randwick back in October but won't be getting warm here.
