Cup Pointer 1 – Weights
As Lou Luciani stated weight is an important factor over the two miles of a Perth Cup and no horse has been able to carry more than 54.5kg to victory for a long time. In fact the 54.5kg was carried by Lottila Bay in 2001 which was sent out as topweight only 3.5kg over the minimum. However minimum weights have only been around 53kg for the last 4 years, previous to that they were 51kg or below. Only Rosskaen and Daka’s Gem are being forced to carry any significant weight above the minimum this year with 4kg and 3kg respectively. It will make the job harder for them but not impossible.

Cup Pointer 2 – Barriers
Surprisingly barriers are more important than you would think in a 3200m. In the last 13 years 11 winners have drawn barrier 7 or better. The only exceptions have been last years winner Respect who was given a beautiful ride by Jason Whiting and Cardinal Colours who got over early from a wide drawn and led all the way.

Cup Pointer 3 – Lead Up race
Strangely none of the past 10 winners have won at their previous start. However, in the last 15 years the winner of the Perth Cup has not been beaten more than 5 lengths including Cardinal Colours who was beaten 10th in the Cox Stakes by exactly that margin. This is a very telling stat and will generally eliminate a lot of the roughies in the race who have been struggling for there best form or just aren’t up to the class of the races they are contesting.

Cup Pointer 4 – C.B. Cox Stakes
The traditional lead up race to the Cup and an amazing stat is that no horse has completed the double in recent years. Of the last 10 Cox Stakes winners 9 have gone into to the Cup with 7 of those runner in the top 5 but no winners. However the Cup winner in the last 9 out of 10 years has contested the Cox Stakes. Only the brilliant King Of Saxony who won first up didn’t go around in the Cox.

Looking at these Cup pointers and comparing with this years field there is one horse who fits the bill nicely in all the above categories – WESTERLY BREEZE. 53kg, barrier 6, beaten ¾ length in the Cox Stakes last start. Historically CATS FUN has a few things against it but given the weaker standard this year could defy the odds. The other runner who deserves some consideration is KIA ORA MISS, the Adam Durrant 5yo mare is also an on speed runner with breeding to match the 3200m distance. The best outsider in the race for sure.

If history is anything to go by an each way ticket with WESTERLY BREEZE is the way to go in this years Perth Cup.

Selections 16. Westerly Breeze 3. Cats Fun 4. Kia Ora Miss

My selection is not much different to the above post and think Jason Whiting (Won last year) can make it back to back Cups with Westerly Breeze Exhilarating.  My trifecta selectios will be as follow:

No. 16 Westerly Breeze
No.  6 Exhilarating
No.  8 Laetare
No.  3 Cat's Fun

It's interesting to note that winner of this race has never gone on to win another race.

Trainer Michael Grant and jockey Damian Miller, rivals in today's Perth Cup, have been involved in a bit of biff at trackwork at Ascot. Chief stipe John Zucal says he knows about the scuffle between Grant, who trains Cup hot fav Cats Fun, and Miller, who'll ride outsider Laetare. But Zucal says no charges are likely. Miller reckons Grant held him around the head and accused him of telling people that Lindsey Smith was training Cats Fun.

Interesting story on Morocco Bound running in today's Perth Cup.

Trainer was so determined the 9 year old would run that he travelled 1200 km over 13 hours to get there.  Seems they couldn't go the normal, shorter way because of the wildfire so he practically did an "around Australia" trip.

After all that effort, I hope the horse gets to take some prizemoney home.   :)

Hope the four horses and jockey's are OK one of them was mine, Laetare.  My trifecta was 3-6-8-16 - missed it for third.

Not a good race to remember!!! About 4 horses down I think and some good ones among them.

Didn't think Cats Fun would win though.

Whiting nearly got his 'back to back' Cups.

Trifecta paid well on SuperTab $605.80, Qld $495.10 and NSW $306.80.  I had mine with Sportingbet with NSW Totes  ;(.

Did you take any of them for the place, your top selection paid $10.70 on QLD Tab.

Been stuck in the kitchen and missed any updates on horses and jockeys. Any news?

Westie, I didn't have a bet today after all, have had a bad run over the last few days.  However, a mate of mine follows my selections to some extent and he had $20 EW on Exhilarating but took trifecta 3, 6, 9 and left out my 16.  :(

He also had $20 W on Publishing, but says he is still down on the last few weeks. He wishes he had the trifecta in Publishing's race:  $5943.10 on UNiTAB.

Congrats on your trifecta. Well done.

Reading on Racing and Sports, the five horses to come down were Daka's Gem, Dr Bella, Rosskaen, The Black Pig and Jereme's Pride.

The story says that fortunately all horses and riders regained their feet and cleared the track before the runners got around there again.

The caller said Laetere was one that went down and he called Dr Bella across the line!! Someone's been mixed up along the line.

Well, R & S is inaccurate in its reporting.  :embarrassed:

There must have been a dead heat for 4th because UNiTAB shows two dividends for First Four.

3, 6, 16, 4 $1547.00

3, 6, 16, 5 $5285.60.

Horse 5 is Dr Bella.

Stewards will hold an inquiry today into the six-horse fall in the Perth Cup last Tuesday.  Inexperienced rider Chloe Charfeild (19) will be the prime witness in the case.

She rode Rossam, which was crossing at the 2800m, when the interference caused a chain reaction.

Two owners of fallen horses have said they intend to examine the legal options over the incident after the inquiry.

(Pity they have to bring that into it.  Why can't we have more people like Mark Kavanagh and his owners?)  :(

I stuffed up, meant to say only one winner in the past 11 years has gone on to win another race.

Rogan Josh was from Darwin.  I'll have to check who that Perth Cup winner was.

Listening to RadioTAB late last night in the car, there was an interview with someone (a regular on the show) from Perth (got that right but can't remember names  :embarrassed:) and the word is that the apprentice suspended for 10 meetings (or weeks) for the interference is appealing.

Evidently there was a general feeling that she got off lightly and they feel she is waving a red flag before a bull by appealing.  Her master and manager won't make any comment at this stage, so we don't know who has advised her on this course of action.  There is a chance that the penalty may be increased!!

Apparently, owners of the 2 horses put down were considering legal action but decided not to in light of her penalty.  If she is successful in the reduction of her penalty, there is the chance that they may rethink that.

At the same time, it was announced that Noel Callow will be in Perth on 16 Feb for Magic Millions.

Westerly Breeze was said to be heading to Singapore for some race or other.

I seriously will have to train my mind to remember all these important things.  :)

Local star Scenic Shot has been officially withdrawn from the Perth Cup leaving NSW visitor Newport as topweight for the New Year's Day feature.

Scenic Shot was given 60kg, five kilos more than Newport with weights to be increased at final declarations to provide for a 57kg topweight in accordance with the rules.

Both Scenic Shot and Newport were unplaced in Saturday's C B Cox Stakes won by Lords Ransom who received a one kilogram penalty for the victory.

The Adam Durrant-trained Lords Ransom was TAB Sportsbet's $3.80 favourite on Tuesday ahead of Adelaide's Right Fong at $7.

Newport, trained by Paul Perry at Newcastle, was a $10 chance.

Jockey Brad Rawiller was happy with Newport's ninth in the Cox Stakes after he raced wide all the way.

"We had a torrid run," Rawiller said.

"I still think he has a live chance in the Cup."

Final declarations for the Perth Cup (2400m) close next Monday.
