I would like to make a couple of points,
First point and something I don't think anyone has touched on is the reason Chautauqua has got a bee in his bonnet, Chautauqua has always been a horse with a mind of his own, he needs to do it "his way" and that was how both Tommy Berry in NSW and Dwayne Dunn in Victoria rode him and Chautauqua was happy that way, he did his very best for them.....then after years of faithful service they put Avdulla on him and he digs the spurs in.....what would you do under those circumstances? Well if I was Chautauqua after years of giving my all I would do exactly what Chautauqua did....refuse to take part...........he is a horse that always needed to be kidded to, treated with Kid gloves....not spurs.....
second point, now he has learnt bad habits he needs a Horse whisperer with a gentle hand to bring him back to the fold......I can't believe John Hawkes let his ego make this decision(and it can't be anything else as he had multiple goes before this last time and failed) he would rather lose the horse to racing than step aside and let someone else have a go, that is pure ego!
Hawkes is a great trainer but this is something different....creating good habits is a whole different ball game than breaking a bad habit, especially in an old horse, someone like Monty understands this and has been doing it all his life, they should have tried the obvious alternative
in saying that I don't think it is the Stewards business to be telling the owners that he should be retired....listening to punters bleat is a waste of time, punting has always been caveat emptor and that is the way it should be.........so long as the people are trying that is all a Punter can ask.....a lot of horses are dishonest conveyances and that isn't a reason to ban them.....Chautauqua has paid his dues, let him race if the owners so decide
