Marasco Makes His Mark
Marasco stamped himself as a worthy ambassador of Western Australia to go to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival when he surprised most of the big crowd, on course just to see him, by winning the $70,000 Carlton Draught Belmont Newmarket (1200m) with an ease that even his trainer Fred Kersley did not expect.
His next mission is the J J Liston stakes over 1400m for $200,000 at standard weight for age and the big question on the lips of racegoers at Belmont was Who will ride the budding champion in Melbourne.
To say that Harvey did his chances no harm with his ride in the Newmarket is to state the blindingly obvious as Marasco did not go round a horse on his way to a 3 length victory and although giving the gelding a couple of cracks to keep his mind on the job the horse could not have had an easier run.
Even Kersley who has seen it all before was surprised by the win: " He just shouldn't have been able to do that but he was given a great run by Harvey we thought Marasco would need a few favours to win today and he got them but he was very impressive"
Settled near the rear of the field the Scenic five year old covered the last 600m in the blistering time of 33.57 secs to beat Ripped with Marasco's stablemate Is Amazing fighting on gamely to finish 3rd.
Real Mak and Vain Crusader were slightly disappointing but will still win good races this time in.
