NSW jockeys get a massive payrise
Clinton Payne
Thursday, 5 February 2009

Racing NSW have agreed to give jockeys in NSW a massive 14% payrise for race and barrier trial rides which will be backdated to February 1.

Race ride fees for jockeys riding in NSW races will increase to $150 per ride while barrier trial ride fees will also rise in line with the race riding fee.

The increase is the biggest in more than 10-years and is equal to more than $1.1million in additional income.

Naturally, NSWJA chief executive, Paul Innes, praised the increase: “This increase in ride fees enables the incomes of jockeys in NSW to maintain pace with cost increases and recognises their skills and the risks undertaken.”

Racing NSW chief executive, Peter V’landys, stated that the increase will not be paid for by the owners but instead covered by the raceclubs.

“The additional $1.1million for jockeys’ expenses is met by race clubs and underlines the importance of the NSW racing industry continuing to grow revenue to ensure it can meet the demands of participant groups,” V’landys said.

Which means the funds are coming out of the TAB distribution which in turns means it is being taken away from prizemoney so therefore the owners are the ones footing the bill.

Negotiations are continuing with the NSWJA over other issues related to jockey welfare programmes such as re-education and special financial assistance for injured riders.
“It is important to ensure that jockeys are recognised for their contribution to the racing industry and to maintain riding talent in NSW,” said V’Landys.

Wonder how long it takes Jockeys from other states to put their hand up for a pay rise.

The owner being slugged again...in a round about sort of way.

I'm tipping a few might emerge from retirement, what with the recession upon us.

These are the stats for Corey Brown during  2008.

 C W BROWN
Last 12 months  |  This season
Rides:     387
Wins:     70
Seconds:     59
Thirds:     48
Strike Rate:     1 winner every 5.5 rides
Strike Rate Percentage:     18.1
Prizemoney:     $5,268,435

Track    Rides    Winners    Placings    SR %    Rides/Wnr
CANT    69    17    42    24.6    4
CAUL    15    2    6    13.3    8
FLEM    36    3    19    8.3    12
GCST    10    1    6    10.0    10
GOSF    27    4    18    14.8    7
GRAF    7    3    5    42.9    2
HAWK    9    2    4    22.2    5
K GR    7    1    5    14.3    7
NCLE    14    3    11    21.4    5
RAND    46    10    23    21.7    5
RAWT    23    2    11    8.7    11
RHIL    56    8    29    14.3    7
W FM    28    4    15    14.3    7
WYNG    26    10    21    38.5    3

I'd imagine there would be plenty of Jockeys around that have more rides than Corey Brown.

If he rides a similar amount over the next 12 months he will earn $54,750 as race ride fees only.  This doesn't take into account Barrier trials ...not that he would ride in too many you wouldn't think.

Added to his %'s of winning rides he would be one of the top bracket earners.

Just as a matter of interest ,G.Ryan the prolific NSW rider had a few morew rides than Brown.

$122,700 for Greg in riding fees only.

Hazardous work, particularly if they are inclined to push the envelope a bit. I can't say I begrudge the money they get.
