Racing Victoria is keeping in contact with overseas parties in order to keep a close eye on developments surrounding the under-fire Phoenix Thoroughbreds organisation.

Reports emerged from the UK on Friday suggesting Phoenix Thoroughbreds has been banned from racing horses in France in the wake of serious money laundering allegations made against founder Amer Abdulaziz Salman.

Salman’s name emerged in a US court last year, alleging he played a key part in an operation laundering money from a fake cryptocurrency scam.

Salman has always denied the allegations.

The reporting of the matter influenced Phoenix Thoroughbred’s decision to stop racing horses in Britain.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds issued a statement last week reaffirming its commitment to Australian racing and breeding where it has had instant success.

Loving Gaby has carried Phoenix’s white and orange colours to Group I wins while the company also has a share in valuable Golden Slipper winner Farnan.

A Racing Victoria spokesman said the governing body would not comment on whether it was investigating Phoenix Thoroughbreds but did say RV would consider information that emerges from overseas inquiries.

“It is not our position to comment on matters that may or may not be the subject of investigation by Racing Victoria,” the RV spokesman said.

“What we are prepared to say with respect to this matter is that we remain in contact with international jurisdictions regarding the reports and allegations and are continuing to follow the associated legal proceedings in the USA.

“We note the most appropriate forum for consideration of the allegations raised in media reports is the legal system.

“Should any information come to light via legal proceedings or other means that warrants any action being taken within our jurisdiction then we will consider it at the time.”

Racing NSW stewards have also been contacted for comment.
