PROBLEM GAMBLING: RACING UNDER THE RADAR

Problem gambling is, apparently, most remarked in respect of (poker) machine-gambling.…..........long legal in NSW, only legal in Victoria since 1991.

Across the states, the presence, and absence, of 'machines' reflects in different cultural attachments to different gambling options.

Cultural differences are very evident in Victorian's attachment to betting on racing.

Casual reflection on the relative popularity of 'quadrellas'  is one pointer to a lingering cultural distortion in Victoria ….... the more critical reflection is about the inclination of Victorians to bet, relatively, so much more on 'racing' than, for example, punters in NSW.

WA racing is similarly a lingering beneficiary of a ban on 'machine gambling' …............ [as in Hong Kong].

So what?

…....... it is no leap of logic to tie RVL's affection for 'inflated field' racing …. to the current situation …........where bets on racing in Victoria …...... typically rort the pockets of  punters …..... punters seemingly unable to put aside a cultural bias in the wake of overwhelming 'facts' demanding they abandon it.

…............. with the Andrew's government about to re-handicap a fallen Crown …... it would be perverse if one consequence was a shift of gambling turnover to 'racing' …. an industry in Victoria so similarly flawed with the distortions of institutionalised administrative corruption.

There are few fervent supporters of full factual transparency in the policies and outcomes of the racing industry, especially in Victoria.

Those harbouring the hope would expect any formal professional inquiry to be informed by facual summaries and analysis tendered by Tabcorp, in particular, across the board, and others offering fixed-odds wagering.

.. the conduct of royal commissions is these days informed by some stellar examples .. from the Wood inquiry into NSW police ......... to the Banking royal commission .....and the investigation of Crown.

All eyes will be on the Andrew's government to see if it is serious about the Crown inquiry in Victoria ... if it is, attention can then be given to a royal commission into the administration of the Victorian racing industry ....... would socks be rocked?
