2011 Shoalhaven horse of the year......55 starts for 10 wins, 16 placings and $138k.

As an 11 year old mare finds herself valued at a lousy $360 and given a one way ticket  from Echuca horse sales to Caboolture.

With big meat quotas to fill for the human consumption market overseas,  there is no second chance nor a left turn along the highway to 'the farm' for this NSW's bred mare.

The great Might And Power - unable to overcome a bout of colic

What an absolute champ...... Might and Power
 If you backed him in the Caulfield Cup that day you would always remember where you were when you saw that win.

Certainty beaten in The AJC Derby at $100 as well.

Will never be forgotten. RIP.

Sad news! He wasn’t a favourite of mine at the time but as time pasts you realise how good he was

I likened his CC win to that of Even Stevens & declared him for MC (wasn't R. Crusoe there of course) . .

Got the chocolates and a big fright to go with it

I was in Wellington NZ that Caulfield Cup day visiting a good friend.
I told him I have to get to a TAB.....there is a horse I backed in the AJC Derby that was $100 and should have won.
Couldn't believe what I had just witnessed and was feeling very good about everything at that point, when my mate who had a touch of the green-eyes when he saw me collecting,  said "he won't win the MC".......why ever not I asked?......"because he's by Zabeel and he doesn't leave 2 milers"

Funny thing, when I remind him.......he doesn't remember.

I was at Caulfield that day and remember backing him at about 14/1. He simply made a mess of them. It was a huge day for me as earlier in the day I found Toledo at 20/1 in the Schillaci Stakes.  Pretty sure he was the bottom weight that day. Ended up being a very good horse, winning a Stradbroke in very fast time.

I was out at Randwick that day and watched the race in front of the QE2 stand.

It was really like watching Kingston Town win.

He only had 10 starts subsequent to that win, winning 6 of them including the Hollindale and Doomben Cup in Qld, and later in the year the Chelmsford, Caulfield Stakes, Cox Plate and VRC QE2.

He was off the scene for nearly 2 years and had only 2 runs before they decided to retire him.

Some of his contemporaries were dual "Cups" winner Doriemus, 13 time Group 1 winner Tie The Knot, 8 time Group 1 winner Intergaze, 4 time Group 1 winner Juggler (who was placed in an incredible 10 Group 1s),  4 time Group 1 winner Dane Ripper, dual Group 1 winners Catalan Opening and Champagne, triple Group 1 winner Tycoon Lil.

He won the Caulfield Cup mentioned above officially by 10.1 lengths.

We have had recent discussions on "good 3yo crops". Might And Power was a 1993 foal by Zabeel, and that year's crop included:

Intergaze
Mouawad (also by Zabeel and 3 time G1 winner more famous for being Octagonal's full brother)
Ebony Grosve (also by Zabeel and Derby/McKinnon winner)
Dashing Eagle (Flight/Thousand Guineas winner who I was talking about during the past week with her last named foal beginning her career)
Merlene (Golden Slipper winner)
Alfa (Tasmanian 2 and 3yo champ who won the Caulfield Guineas before being sent to be trained on the mainland - I think it was with Bart but happy to be corrected)
Markham (SA Derby winner, Melb Cup placed)
Assertive Lass (Coolmore Classic and dead heated with Dashing Eagle in the Flight)
Danendri (Vinery/Oaks double)
Bezeal Bay (Cantala)
Magic Of Sydney (G1 Champion Stks)

In spite of only being a year apart in age, I don't think he ever raced against Octagonal.

Turf: Racing legend Might and Power dead

Might And Power, one of Australian racing’s immortals, has died after suffering a colic attack.

The winner of the 1997 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups and the 1998 Cox Plate, Might And Power was diagnosed with colic late on Saturday.

He was rushed to the Werribee Equine Centre for emergency surgery, but was unable to be saved.

Might and Power retired in 1999.

Foaled in 1993, and trained by Jack Denham, Might And Power was lauded as Australian Horse of the Year in 1998 and ‘99.

The Zabeel powerhouse was rated the world’s best stayer when in ’97 when, as a four-year-old, he won the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double.

He is defined by a staggering Caulfield Cup victory when, in trademark frontrunning style, he ran his rivals ragged to win by almost eight lengths, smashing the race record.

Lee Freedman called it “The most amazing race I have ever seen”.

Might And Power returned the following spring to monster a crack field in the Cox Plate, lowering champion Saintly’s race record by two seconds.

In doing so, he became only the second horse after Rising Fast in 1954, to win both Cups and the Cox Plate, and the first reigning Melbourne Cup winner since Phar Lap in 1931 to win the Cox Plate.

Might and Power won 15 of his 33 race starts and $5,226,286 in prize money.

Might and Power bowed out after suffering a tendon Injury in 1999. He was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2002.

Absolutely nothing to support my $100 SP price re Might And Power in The Derby through Racing Australia......SP 25-1.
Never understood why the official SP could be so different to the tote odds........so I'll call his Derby odds as huge.
Did not see daylight at any time down the Randwick straight.

Disappointing to see Racing Australia listing Anthony Cummings as the trainer through his whole career, bar his 2 comeback runs......wouldn't he wish?
Surely a horse of this standard deserves to have an accurate record of his career recorded.

With the massive forces at play when his legs hit the ground you would have to say Might And Power did very well to race 33 times.
Certainly got the retirement he deserved.

He was a champion. That Caulfield Cup win was incredible but he had several other superb wins particularly the QE when he beat Champagne. I'd forgotten that he had 5 starts as a 4yo prior to the Caulfield Cup.

It was a pity that they bought him back for those 2 runs as a 7yo. He was just a shadow of his former self. As Nemesis says, we're lucky they got 33 starts out of him.

A quick look at his record shows he didn't race against Octagonal.

He had just had a collic operation

Scales Of Justice suffers suspected heart attack at Warrnambool beach

Trainer Lindsey Smith admits he probably would not be training in Melbourne if it wasn’t for Scales Of Justice, who died while on an exercise run on Warrnambool beach.

Vets at the University of Melbourne will conduct a post-mortem investigation on Scales Of Justice after the Group 1 winner collapsed and died while working on Warrnambool beach.

Warrnambool Racing Club said: “The horse was cantering in accordance with the approved guidelines of beach exercise when the incident occurred.

“The horse’s rider sustained no injuries.

“All at Lindsey Smith Racing are distraught at the horse’s passing and the WRC will be supporting the stable through this tough time, including monitoring the wellbeing of the horse’s rider.”

Scales Of Justice won 12 of his 30 starts, including the 2016 Railway Stakes, and more than $2.3 million in stakes.

Transferred back to Smith from disqualified Darren Weir’s stable, Scales Of Justice also won the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in August last year. The gelding’s last win was in the Group 2 Australia Stakes (1200m) at The Valley in January.

“He was having a canter down the beach and his rider just felt him go from underneath,” Smith told RSN radio. “He was a beautiful horse from the start. You could see the intelligence in his eye. I wouldn’t be in Melbourne without him. I owe him a lot.”

RIP Steel Prince.
I can't let your passing go without comment.

He caught my attention early in his D Weir days.
Something about the galloping action, the head carry but most of all the courage.
Have to admit until recently I wouldn't let him go around with having something on.....sometimes quite a bit for me.
Some outstanding performances on Vic tracks that were concrete....amazing constitution, until the tendon injury.
I can see why he would be a very special horse to the people who cared for him.

Sad way to see you go yesterday, fellow!
Just wish Racing had a completely independent body that would investigate and report deaths like this, so soon after the start....that was rare
