My goodness Tontonan the memories never stop do they.

Even though they wont make the list Purple Patch and Taj Rossi still bring back visions of great contests and great wins on the punt.

Did you see the weight he carried to win a New Plymouth Hcp first up on 03/08/94  :o

I do not for a second want to down play his achievement but I guess it might do, That race was a special graduation open for horse that had not won in the previous 12 months.

It might only be nostalgia but the 1970's did seem to be a bit of a golden age.

The thing that strikes me is how many of the juveniles carried on to be top line performers in maturity.  That gave racing a continuity that was extremely attractive as horses built on their records season after season, developed followings and enduring rivalries and brought a whole lot of back story to every race.  That's what we have lost I reckon.

These days this years champion juveniles will either be busted or retired 12 months on.  There are a few exceptions but you used to do your Derby form out of the Sires Produces, or at least fish for the classic winners out of those races.  These days not so much.  Even with the prevailing sprinting culture the horses that turn us on have generally not been crack juveniles.  When horses like All Too Hard and Pierro come along they are like gold but they are off to stud before you know it.

Imagele was a stallion but he was raced like a gelding.  He did go to stud but served only two seasons before he died.  None of them were much good. I suspect that these days a horse like Imagele would be managed very differently, wouldn't go anywhere near a Derby, and having shown quality as a bub would molly coddled through a light and selective 3YO campaign and marketed as something more than he had proven to be.  And who knows, maybe he would have made a sire.

But when you look through his record the horses he was racing against as a youngster - Tontonan, Authentic Heir, Purple Patch, Zephyr Bay, Americano - all carried on at the top level.  Horses seem to be more disposable these days.

Rough Habit was top class anywhere from 1400 to 2000 metres.
I don't reckon he was ever a 2400 horse, though. Won the Qld Derby on class and superior ability in the ground.
Don't know how he ever started so short in a Caulfield Cup.

He would have been well suited to European racing as the 4-5 horse fields and plenty of give in the ground would have been right up his alley.
Not having to go around corners would have helped too.

Well done mate. Thanks for that    emthup

emthdown   I'm afraid.  The only links on the menu that are working are the ones that I just added.  The links highlight when the cursor is over them but they don't action.  I've done something to them when I have been stripping the code.  I'll have another look at it and see if I can't get them back.

Thank you sir.

When I stripped the junk code I used the 'Replace' tool but I left behind a " on every line which basically disabled every link and buggered up the line breaks.  I have a clean copy of the index on file now so it shouldn't happen again.

One of those wins was a listed win beating Rare Chance.  You can imagine how scathing old Jackal would be of that if Roughie had another name

I just realised we haven't added La Carabine to the collection and we certainly should.
She is arguably the best staying mare ever bred in Australia, the grandest daughter of Carbine.  She won 4 races later designated Group 1 but the Champion Stakes was certainly as good a race as any of those and she won it twice.

FAMILY OF MAN (AUS) 1973
78 starts, 21 wins (7 x Group 1), 16 seconds and 13 thirds.  Win % 26.9, Place % 64.1.
Stakewinnings AUD 646,240
As my stakewinnings varies slightly from other figures I have seen I have included each races earnings at the end of each race result.
The 1983 Miller's Guide has a figure of AUD 647,990 and Mark Taylor (Century of Champions) has a figure of AUD 650,540 (individual race results not shown).
While Peter Pring's record is incomplete (Major Australaian Races and Racehorses 1960-1980) because his book was published before Family of Man's career was complete (ending at his fourth start into the 1980-81 season) there are two differing results - for the 1976 WATC Marlboro '50,000' (G1) where Pring has AUD 35,000, and for the 1976 WATC Australian Derby (G1) where Pring has AUD 72,500, whereas I have figures of AUD 34,650 and AUD 71,000 respectively. If Pring's figures are correct and accepting my later figures are correct the total will be AUD 648,090 however this still not equal either the Miller's Guide or Mark Taylor's figures.

Family Of Man would have to be one of the most unacknowledged champions - IMHO.

That Cox Plate he won in 1977 was a crash hot field.

Have a look at the names that appear as either winners/2nd/3rd in the races he contested - winning  a great many.

The 77 Cox Plate was actually a very weak field.
Half the field was made up of 3 year olds , most of whom barely got 8 furlongs, not 1 running a place.
The import Raffindale ran 2nd with the average kiwi Vice Regal 3rd.

Family Of Man was a journeyman who lucked in now and again.

Manikato, who was essentialy a great sprinter, could beat him at 10 furlongs as well.

Peter Pring doesn't record it but I am pretty sure Family of Man broke the Flemington 1400m record when he won the House of Windsor Stakes.  The old Imperial record was 1.23.0 for 7 furlongs which I think converted to 1.22.8 for 1400m.

For some reason the Flemington records of the 1970's are etched into my brain - it went Make Mine Roses (1000m) Auries Star (1200m) Vain (1400m) Amiable (1600m) Sky High (2000m) I can't remember the 2500m record holder but it had only been a distance since 1972, and Rain Lover at 3200m.  They have all been broken now but some of them stood for a very long time.

I loved Family of Man.  He was made to order for me.  He was the style of old fashioned,  very versatile, always competitive iron horse type that always appeals to me.

He was unfashionably bred by a 17 hand unraced (but well bred) American sire standing Dubbo that never produced another stakeswinner, and a mare with an old colonial pedigree tracing to the likes of Wallace, The Barb, Fireworks, Malua, Trenton, Bobadil, Fisherman, Carbine and Panic.  He grew up in Bairnsdale and was up and racing in October of his juvenile year, and was winning all the way through to his seventh year.  He raced in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and Canberra.  And he was as sound as an ox.

That 14 month gap in his career in 1979/80 was because he was serving mares for a season.

Not everybody loved him.  He was beaten as favourite something like 17 times and many regarded him as a curse that only won when he wasn't supposed to.

I am always surprised to read others claim that he was 'inconsistent'.  The horse had a win rate of  almost 27% and a place rate of 64% over a 78 start career largely at the elite level.  What do they want ?

He was honest, and he was competitive but he was never dominant.   They don't have to be dominant to rate with me.

Or Slim Dusty.  He wrote a song about him on his album 'Spirit of Australia' ...

Born but never tired at Nevertire on the New South plains,
Son of Lots of Man but sire unknown,
Just a yearling when he came to East Gippsland,
Oh the Bairnsdale hills of green became his home,
In country where they raise the best of cattle,
Where the rivers run down to the lakes an' to the sea,
Oh, the tall bay colt was running like the southern wind,
But none could know the champion he would be.

The richest winner of our time,
Family of Man,
Flyin' bay from Bairnsdale,
Family of Man,
Over half a million and he’s winning races yet,
Oh, Family of Man will be a name we won’t forget.

Quality renewals of the Cox Plate don't use 7 three year olds as a filler I'm afraid.
The 1977 Cox Plate had 7, half the bloody field.
It hasn't happened since and it didn't subsequently prove to be a great bunch either.
Prior to that it hadn't happened since 1970.

I think Jackal has a point.  The 1977 Plate, despite being populated by many notable horses, was not a terribly strong race.

Apart from Luskin Star none of the 3YOs were better than 40/1.

Luskin Star was a 7/4 favourite ahead of Raffindale at 3/1.  Raffindale had smashed the ANZ record for a mile in the Epsom and the Caulfield 1400m record at his two previous starts but like Luskin Star he had never won beyond a mile - and neither of them every would.

The 4YOs were next in the market.  Unaware, who never really lived up to his 3YO promise was 9/2.  Sir Silver Lad was 6/1 and Family of Man, coming off a win in the Caulfield Stakes was 10/1.  Sir Silver Lad had an attack of MVitis and finished 6th before winning the Mackinnon the following week.   Family of Man's WFA form was solid, as it was throughout his career.

Raffindale ran a very brave race but felt the pinch and Family of Man got the better of him in the last bit.  Luskin Star was found wanting beyond a mile.

The clutch of 3YOs in the 1977 Cox Plate may be partly explained by the success 3YOs had enjoyed in the race in the 1970's. Daryl's Joy, Abdul, Taj Rossi and Surround had all saluted in recent seasons so the 3YOs had been batting above their weight but the following 30 years would only yield wins to Red Anchor, Octagonal and Savabeel.

Family Of Man would have to be one of the most unacknowledged champions - IMHO.

Totally agree mate, that reco9rd is stunning
Belmura Lad was a great horse as was Raffindale, Luskin Star, Ming Dynasty

I remember the race (77 Cox Plate) at the time and the excitement it generated - mainly because of Luskin Star, but it was a great field regardless.

In terms of anticipation, I'd have it up there with the Bonecrusher/Vo Rogue Australian Cup non-event (Dandy Andy won it), Lonhro Australian Cup and last race QE2 and some of the Black Caviar appearances.

It was at the height of Ian McEwan's 'hyping' of the race as the race of champions.  Raffindale came to the party but the Luskin Star bubble burst as so many 3YOs bubbles have in this race.  The most consistent WFA horse with the best record at Moonee Valley won, as they often do.

I rate those races where the horses are already proven as the strongest contests.  2002 and 1992 for example.  There were too many unprovens in 1977. Two sprinters had the market between them - that's never a good sign.

As far as Family Of Man is concerned, 21 of 78 is not the record a champion.
He would probably rank inferior to Battle Heights, another journeyman that won the Cox Plate in the 70's ( not a strong era )
Battle Heights would rate more versatile.

The best winner of a Cox Plate in the 70's was the last winner of that era Dulcify.
Shivaree, who finished 2nd in that race would have won any of the other Cox Plate's of that era by a margin.

Both the 76 and 77 Cox Plate's were piss weak fields as were most of the fields through that era.
Anything that ran in the 77 Cox Plate and ran close up, had their arses smacked a year later by the moderate So Called who certainly wouldn't rank in the pantheon of NZ greats.

An interesting footnote to that is that of the entires that won the Cox Plate in the 70's, you could not find a group of more spectacular failures in the stud barn?   :chin:
