courtesy racenet:
A distraught Kris Lees has reported on his website champion three-year-old filly Samantha Miss is out of the autumn carnival after damaging a tendon in a track gallop at Newcastle this morning.

“She’s has gone amiss,” Lees said on Lees Racing.

“After she cooled down following a track gallop this morning there was a little bit of thickness in her near side tendon.

“The vet has been in and scanned her and the tendon is strained.

“She’ll go to Sydney for further scans to decide which way we go with her but she is out for the autumn.”

The three time Group One winning filly returned in great style when a fast finishing second in the Light Fingers Stakes 10-days ago and was due to have her next start in Saturday week’s Group II Surround Stakes at Randwick before contesting the Group I Coolmore Classic on her way to the AJC Australian Oaks.

From 12 career starts Samantha Miss has won seven races with a further four placings and her career earnings stand at $1,763,260.

Very disappointing stuff. Connections must be shattered. Hope she recovers.

That is really sad isn't it.  Here's a hypothetical question for discussion:

If we assembled a field of the best 3yo Fillies from the past 20 years and raced them over a mile, would Samantha Miss have run down Sunline?

And had a massive weight advantage, thus proving absolutely nothing.

If we assemble the best 16 fillies from the past 20 years, would there be any other front runners amongst them ?

I agree Old larsy.

However if you do have a mythical field of 12 runners, you would be hard pressed to see Sunline getting an easy lead if she is drawn wide. From the top of my head I would have to chuck horses like Slight Chance, Serenade Rose, Miss Finland, Alinghi and Triscay could fight for a place behind Sunline too.

Remind me again what Sunline did as a 3yo... I didn't think she really come into her own until she turned 4? (but I could be wrong)

And it should of been 8 straight, as G Childs went that hard on her
ran the 1st 800 in 47 odd then went for home before the rise
only to be collared the last few strides

IT wasn't when she was 3, it was later when Over beat her.
I think she had won 14 of her first 16 starts the other 2 runs she ran 2nd.
What an amazing animal she was, 45 starts unplaced i think 3 times
won nearly 10 mill.

Make it thirty years and the question becomes Sunline or Emancipation over a mile.

Now that would be something to see.
