Sky racing set for free-to-air deal during Coronavirus crisis

Punters should be able to watch Sydney and Brisbane races on free-to-air television as early as Saturday, with Tabcorp close to doing a deal to have Sky Thoroughbred Central coverage on a major network.

The deal will allow Saturday racedays to be shown on free-to-air TV until the lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions, which have prevented punters from going to their regular Saturday haunts of pubs and clubs.

Tabcorp has been in negotiations for the past week with several TV networks to have Saturday meetings shown in a move that it is hoped will boost betting turnover.

“We have a live sport and are negotiating to get it on free-to-air TV and have had interest from a number of networks,” a Tabcorp spokesman said.

“We want to allow as many people to watch races on Saturday as possible and realise that not everyone has access to pay-TV.

“We want to allow people who would usually access the races on Saturdays at other venues the ability to watch them at home.”

In hard times, racing has often been a fallback for the public and the ratings of Sky Racing and TAB digital platforms in the past month indicate a strong demand during the autumn carnival.

Racing.com, which holds the rights to Victorian and South Australian racing, has also seen its numbers soar and already has a free-to-air platform on channel 78.

The TAB is in a strong position to on-sell Sydney and Brisbane racing, and maybe Perth, in a deal that could run until September, when feature meetings return to channel seven.

The natural partner for Sky coverage would be Channel Seven, which has existing deals with Racing NSW, Racing Queensland and the Australian Turf Club for feature meetings through the year. However, other networks are keen to take the Saturday racing product.

Sky Racing holds the rights to Sydney and Brisbane racing outside of 22 feature Sydney meetings, which are on Channel Seven through a deal brokered by Racing NSW, and a handful of Brisbane winter meetings, which are subject to a similar deal between Racing Queensland and Seven.

“We would like to have as many eyeballs on racing as possible and this is an opportunity for racing to be seen by a bigger audience,” Racing Queensland chief executive Brendan Parnell said.

Racing NSW is also supportive of getting racing on free-to-air TV. It's likely any deal would see racing on the main channel of the network and could be signed by Tuesday.

“These are unprecedented times and we are proud of Sky Racing’s role in continuing to keep racing fans informed with the best racing vision, talent and tips, as well as reaching new audiences to help racing grow,” Tabcorp executive general manager Darren Pearce said when announcing the the increase in the audience for Sky Racing last week.

FMD  :stop:

The time honored Wangoom is run so WTF do Sky do? We get a split screen of some nondescript race from Canberra of horses doing nothing, not only split, the screen was quartered with a big orange box displaying nothing in the bottom.

It bordered on ludicrous

It's absolutely deliberate......it has to be.

Nothing 'time honoured' about anything Victorian in the minds of Racing NSW.

Surely one of the reasons A Bensley took his leave.

I don't have an aerial, so don't get the digital channels, only a Foxtel box. Would have had to walk back to the 'puter to watch.

The only excuse was the work experience kid was left in charge whilst someone else ducked out for a smoke, whoever was in charge certainly doesn't follow racing.

Based on what? You didn't win? or you simply can't enjoy yourself - ever.

3 double figure winners out of 9 races with the favs winning the 2 big ones. This is after a fantastic display from Ablaze in the Grand Annual yesterday.

........ it is the day's experience as a whole that counts, and every day counts against RVL.

Any chance Sky could get rid of Col Hodges. His calls Today from Parkes are a blight on the Industry.

Aww leave Col alone.

It is Parkes. Who were you expecting at Parkes? Johnny Tapp perhaps? Ken Howard? Cyril Angels?

It was a TAB meeting and he is totally useless. No question that he is the worst caller at TAB meetings in Australia by far. Time has come for someone to tap him on the shoulder, give him a send off and find someone competent.

Not much social distancing in that interview and Col Hodges would fit into the category of being vulnerable :shy:
