Randwick races have been abandoned today along with Newcastle due to heavy rain.  Apparently the club is trying to schedule three of the races, including the Chelmford Stakes to next Tuesdays meeting on the Keningo.  These races would be run on the course proper.

Maybe transferring the Championships to Melbourne would work .....

I'm told that the Easter meetings have been impacted by poor weather in 8 of the last 10 years. Wouldn't a change of timing work?? February??

From Racenet:

Sydney’s horrible weather has had a flow-on effect to Monday’s Sandown Lakeside meeting in Melbourne.

Persistent rain forced the postponement of the first day of The Championships at Randwick until Monday.

The likes of top jockeys Damien Oliver, Craig Williams and Dwayne Dunn all had books of rides at Sandown on Monday, which required Racing Victoria stewards to release them from their Melbourne obligations.

Acting chief steward Robert Cram said a decision to release the riders to fulfil their Sydney engagements required little consideration.

"It’s just common sense to release the riders for Group I races,” Cram said.

"We don’t mind making the changes. It’s the stakeholders like the trainers that could be upset with the situation.

"If they’ve got D.Oliver or one of those jockeys on their horses, it’s going to be annoying but the situation is unavoidable.”

Did anybody hear Greg Radleys explanation for todays postponement ?

Surely that would not have been to official thinking process ?

He basically said the meeting would have been safe to start with but the Club could not guarantee it could get through the day.

It happens.  Melbourne Cup day has been postponed twice in 154 years - in 1870 and 1916.  The Cox Plate meeting was abandoned after the main race in 1975 when it really shouldn't have been run in the first place but the presence of royal personages meant the show must go on regardless of safety.

But last year the debut of 'The Championships' was run on a Heavy 9.  This year it has been postponed.

Perhaps the universe is trying to tell them something.

Looks like it is Matt  :chin:

I know you're trying to stir but on face value I tend to agree.

Sydney Airport
31st - 10.4mm
1st - 21.6mm
2nd - 0
3rd - 0.4mm
4th - 17.2mm (till 9am)

It's hardly a lot in the grand scheme so I can only surmise they have taken the decision due to the fact it hasn't let up at all and is supposed to rain all day  :chin:

We had tix for today but can't make it for Mon as we were going with a few others.

We cannot make it for Mon so we are either getting a refund or if possible postpone it till next week.

Wonder how many people will actually go through the gates on Monday. Being a day before work day and lack of places to kick on, the younger brigade may postpone their attendance to another day.

Raises the question as to what they do today to improve the track or is Navesh going to sit on his hands.

Christ, he probably had the sprinkers on last night

Track has looked fantastic today. Very smart decision to give it the time to absorb the rain from friday and Saturday.  8-)

Geez didn't Richard Freeman grill the ATC bloke yesterday. Just about told him they should have run the races in spite of the rain.

Looking like a brilliant decision at this time. Just hope the rain stays away. A few clouds gathering where I am.

Apparently 90% chance of rain.

Clouds are now above me, so another 10km until they cover Randwick.

I hope the rain comes. I am not one to get too excited about track bias, but this is just awful. Horses are just going up and down in the one spot. Maybe the rain will open the track up and we can get some horses running on.

Has it been that bad.

I reckon been more racing pattern than a bias.

A definite lack of atmosphere a the track today.

Dunno what the official crowd figure was, but it didn't feel like there were many more present today than, say, at the Randwick Guineas meeting.
