*Further work on Hong Kong earnings

**I have Chautauqua earning HKD 5,700,000 in Hong Kong which I have translated to AUD 959,903 which is included in AUD 8,755,653 whereas racingnsw.com.au has AUD 1,026,185 which is AUD 66,282 more and without further information I cannot explain the difference.

I have excluded Silent Witness (AUS) 1999 est AUD 9,119,000 as he never raced in Australia and Good Ba Ba (USA) 2001 est AUD 9,360,000 as he only ran 4 times in Australia as a 12YO.

I think I have captured all that have earned more than AUD 5,000,000.  If anyone thinks I have missed one let me know.

WORLD'S TOP EARNERS

Moved from page 2 and modified as 'unknowns' become 'knowns', as Donald Rumsfeld might say, or as bureaucrats have been know to say 'it is a 'living document''.

List in order of USD earnings as the USD  is more often than not the world's default currency.

Where known I have also shown the GBP and AUD equivalent and if the horse was based in Japan the JPY amount which includes foreign earnings converted to JPY which 'jbis' does not include on its website.

I think the top 20 are settled (updated 9.23pm 28/10/2018).  Of the top 3 dozen or so 5 'Australian' horses make the list: Winx, Redzel, Makybe Diva, Vengeance of Rain and So You Think.

Below the top 3 dozen I have include some I have not researched ('not reviewed'), some others that didn't make the USD 8m cutoff and 3 notable ANZ horses that just fell short when converting their ANZ earnings to USD (and GBP).

The horses still racing are those that have an 'as at' date after the AUD amount which indicates the last race date for which the information has been updated.  None of those horses are likely to race again in the 2018 calendar year.

Except in the case of those marked 'not reviewed' the figures are all mine converting all currencies into AUD then into USD and GBP (if necessary) using RBA Daily Indicator rates for the date of the race or the previous trading day if that falls on a non-trading day;

* I have Viva Pataca's record as 51 starts for 18-5-10 with 18 unplaced.  racingpost.com omits first 3 Hong Kong starts for calendar year 2006 which can be found on hkjc.com.  His wikipedia page seems a bit dodgy.  hkjc.com have his career earnings as HKD 83,197,500 which is HKD 1,142,590 more than I have estimated using a combination of hkjc.com total race HKD prizemoney divided into the GBP place proportions given for each start on racingpost.com (other than 3 missing Hong Kong starts). It is possible at least some the difference is owed to the rate hkjc used to convert his USD 1,000,000 Dubai earnings into HKD.  The wikipedia over USD 10m earnings list has his earnings as HKD 81,297,500 and USD 10,438,864 so the wikipedia USD is fairly close to my USD figure.  There also appears to be significant forex rate differences with racingpost.com GBP amounts for races held towards the end of some calendar years and this would affect the USD conversions. My GBP figure (GBP 5,996,621) is very close to the figure used by https://www.thoroughbredracing.com (GBP 5,994,640). I will keep looking.

** Re Skipaway: The Equibase chart for Woodbine Million Stakes (Canada) states: "All money values represented in Canadian currency unless noted otherwise".  As no note stating otherwise it is taken that the prizemoney is expressed in CAD (CAD 600,000).  Equibase may have failed to pick up on this when calculating yearly and total earnings so Equibase USD earnings for Skip Away are overstated by about USD 162,598.00 unless they determined that CAD 1.00 = USD 1.00.

*** hkjc.com has Vengeance of Rain's career earnings at HKD 75,410,500 which includes USD 3,000,000  (equivalent to HKD 23,443,866 (my figure)) earned in Dubai but excludes 3 Australian starts which he earned AUD 64,000 which Is equivalent to HKD 302,164.  While I do not have full place earnings details my estimate of total Hong Kong earnings (inc Dubai and Australia) is HKD 70,596,030 which is a massive difference.

#  'pedigreequery.com' has Cirrus des Aigles earnings at over EUR 8.3 million and this is clearly wrong.  My GBP figure is very close to the 'racingpost .com' figure
## Maurice earned almost half his total earnings from 3 starts in Hong Kong for 3 wins in Group 1 races. 'racingpost' does not cover all his Japanese starts.

AUSTRALASIAN THOROUGHBRED EARNINGS RECORD HOLDERS THROUGH THE AGES

CARBINE (NZ) 1885

Country record:

Country record:
Australia (1918-19 to 1922-23): Starts 47:  31-6-4-6 for AUD 73,982.00.

The 1960 American Racing Manual does not distinguished between Canadian and United States dollar earnings in effect treating the currencies as having equal value.
The rate used to convert CAD to USD is the rate published for calendar year 1959 from a table viewed 'PACIFIC Exchange Rate Service' by the Universaity of British Coumbia Sauder School of Business (© 2016 by Prof. Werner Antweiler). Although not unexpected Prof. Antweiler's table also reflects a steady exchange rate of USD 1.12 to an equivalent AUD 1.00 (or USD 2.24 to £A 1.00) a figure widely quoted in the Australian newspapers at the time Sailor's Guide raced in North America.  I have not been able to locate any Reserve Bank of Australia exchange rate data covering this period on the internet.

Sailor's Guide won 4 Group 1 races (retrospective) including the Washington DC International.

On 12 March 1990 Vo Rogue passed Poetic Prince's Australasian earnings record of  AUD 2,842,043 when Vo Rogue earned AUD 427,500 on winning the Honda Australian Cup (G1) taking his earnings to AUD 2,931,850.
Horlicks had earned AUD 2,734,711 by that date.

I am uncertain whether the AUD 210,000 earned for winning the WATC Winfield Stakes on 26 November 1988 includes an AUD 2,000 trophy.  Even if Vo Rogue's total is understated by AUD 2,000 it does not change the date of the lead changes or the horses involved.

These lists mean nothing, unless someone has adjusted for inflation etc....a far superior horse that raced a decade before the other has no chance on these lists.
What if She Will Reign wins the Everest jackpot? Hmmmm

Ah the Everest. Yes indeed. What will they say including those behind the Pegasus World Cup, the Breeders Cup, the British Champions meeting and Dubai World Cup meeting  or even Vic racing.  We also have sales promotion races, restricted territorial races and territorial breeders bonuses.  Didn't we once have a special Group 1 race to celebrate the America's Cup the 1983 'Australasian' in Perth.  Unlike so many Group 1 races at least the Everest is likely to attract the best possible field.  At least until recently the Americans did not include Japanese earnings in statistical tables because they believe they were inflated - see DRF website for some stuff on this - but they did include Dubai earnings - go figure.  Now they have their own Pegasus meeting perhaps their rules will change especially now that Arrogate is the money leader.  Perhaps to borrow the latest excuse for any perfidy from the business world the answer is: 'it is what it is'.

Cheers

timw I could not disagree with you more about the Everest concept having the best 12 horses available..........it could have a field of 12 unraced horses, or maidens.........just say some multi buys all 12 slots...........total .cost 21,600,000 for 3 years.....guaranteed return $30,000,000.....Guaranteed profit $8,400,000..............then you buy 12 of the slowest horses in the country...........you can run them and collect $10mill each year with a heard of donkeys.....then send the winner to stud and Breed from it, it would be worth $30Mill as a Stallion......especially if you wait for the race to become established and get Group One status......which the big Breeders will make sure happens...........what a rort this race could be??

Now I haven't read the small print but what is to stop anyone doing that?? Now if the small print did say no individual can do that,  what if a Trainer like say David Hayes gets 12 clients together buys all 12 slots and they are a guaranteed profit of almost 50% on $20mill?? It doesn't have to have the best 12 horses.....how is Tulip better performed than a couple of the ones that missed out? If you own the slot you can run anything(and I think Tulip is huge overs and has a chance) but if it was the 12 best performed horses she would not get a Guernsey, would she?

Dave , Lets call it what it is . The " Everest" is a load of crap. The marketing genius' s who are probably being paid a small fortune couldn't even come up with a better name than something that is peculiar to an another Country. If South Africa comes up with a new race do you think they will call it the "Sydney Opera House Stakes". Total garbage. As a famous racing scribe once said , if you put the breeders in charge of anything you will get greed in all its  manifestations. That sadly is what has happened in NSW.

tim,

For the sake of good house keeping I have cut and pasted your list to the post that is indexed as Prizemoney Record Holders on the Race Records of Champion Racehorses thread.

Marvelous research.   :noteworthy:

Fabulous list.

Some absolutely wonderful mares there.

Wakeful is a most appropriate place to start but I would bet my boots that she surpassed LA CARABINE (Australian Cup,  Sydney Cup, 2 AJC Plates and 2 Champion Stakes) to claim the record.  Before La Carabine it is hard to say.  I am thinking BRISEIS but £3219 hardly seems enough - although there is a decided lack of champion race mares prior to the turn of the century. La Carabine is a gimme though at £9967.

Prior to Briseis I would look to BARBELLE, sister to The Barb, whose Doncaster, Sydney Cup and 3 editions of the VRC Flying Stakes would have put her up there but we would need to check on ZOE as her two Champion Sweepstakes only could have been worth £2750 and I am doubtful Barbelle earned as much.  Zoe also won a handful of 100 sovereign races which would probably take her purse to excess of Briseis.

Prior to Zoe the ancients ALICE HAWTHORN and DORA would have amassed tidy fortunes but we probably will never know with any exactitude.

That is a fantastic list!

Before La Carabine, it would be hard to know. Auraria which won the 1895 Melbourne Cup, VRC Oaks and Fisher Plate for a total from those 3 victories of £4229 10s would probably be ahead of Briseis and Zoe. There were very few outstanding mares before La Carabine.

It's interesting compared to today, but on a list from 1944 of the highest-earning Australasian horses, Desert Gold was the highest mare although in 25th place overall.

Some amazing horses there.  How about Kingston ?  A world record 89 wins, only out of the money 4 times in 138 starts.  He raced from two  through his 10 year old season and was the leading sire in America when he was 16 and again when he was 26.

In 1910, when he was champion the second time his son Novelty was the leading US money winner and champion 2YO but was then exported to France and later Brazil because of the Harts-Agnew laws that made gaming and horse racing illegal in New York state in 1908.  Racing was only able to continue by oral wagering.  Anything written down was deemed illegal and the law was out in force to enforce the law.  These laws followed on from similar acts in neighboring New Jersey from 1898 that started something of an exodus of horses and riders from America to Europe including the great Tod Sloan.  After a 1911 amendment to the law to limit the liability of owners and directors was defeated, every racetrack in New York State shut down.  Racing resumed in New York in 1913 after the full economic gravity of ban was realized.

I note that a Mr Duryea shipped all his US mares to France and formed a stud a Neuvy, Normanby in 1912 because of the anti-betting bill.  As a result Durbar II (1911)  was the first horse from France to win the English Derby since Gladiateur in 1865 although Durbar II did not have a drop of French blood in him..  Interestingly Durbar 11 was not classified as a thoroughbred and his 'victory (in the Derby) caused pain to purists' until 1949 when changes to the Stud Book rules regularized his position.  See  Biographical Encyclopaedia of British Flat Racing (1978) for more.

Yes, the Jersey laws.

They had quite an impact on the evolution of the sport of thoroughbred racing in the first half of the 20th century and were responsible, I think, for the various jurisdictions developing apart from one another.

I presume Weatherby's took exception to the lines of Lexington on Durbar's dam side because his grandsire Timolean was out of the Saltram Mare (~1801) who traces to the Vampire mare (~1757) at the head of American Family 24.

157 years on the British declared Durbur not worthy of the Stud Book and the horse beat all the colts worthy of the Stud Book for the Derby.  Ridiculous.

Almandin how now joined the AUD 5,000,000 plus career earnings club coming in at no 22.  Of the other members of the 5m+ club still racing Winx is no 1 (of course), Chautaqua is no 7, and Redzel has moved up to no 8,

The way the Everest prize money keeps increasing, it won't be long before a single win will overtake all bar Winx on the list.
