Back in the old days when circuses were vastly different to what they are today, there were often acts where a man put his head inside the mouth of a lion.

Does anyone know if anyone ever died after undertaking such activity?

Yes unfortunately.
I believe a few died when the head put into their mouths was the head of an Eastern Suburbs supporter.

The topic of conversation at the dinner table last night was risky occupations.

I ventured "Horse Dentist" as I wouldn't fancy sticking metal objects into the mouth of a horse who is sore in that area.

Someone trumped that with "Circus Act - stick head in Lion's Mouth". I was just wondering if it is really that risky?

There is a web site that lists the 10 worst Circus Accidents but no report of a man having his head bitten off by a lion although a lion tamer was once mauled to death by 3 lions - crowd got their money's worth that night.

A mate of mine once after a bad week on the punt, applied for a job as a lion tamer . .

The circus-owner, stressing the courage required to do the job, called a female attendant who entered the cage, took off her shirt, and placed her left breast into the lion's mouth . .

"Would you be brave enough to do that?" he asked . .

"Too right," said the mate. "Just as soon as you get that bloody lion out!"
