This is quite interesting and makes Rugby in Australia more unattractive for broadcasters long term if the news is true.

The Rugby broadcast deal got a lot more interesting. Reports are Optus really wants to jump in as they know they will get dedicated fans. If they get 100k extra subscribers, it will be worth it especially if some of them also switch mobile or broadband plans.

Foxtel / News are upset at Castle for not accepting their offer for the rights. Foxtel has low ratings for Rugby but their viewers usually are on a more expensive package.

To be blunt Foxtel had it good for so long as most including me had to pay overs for sports as we had to pay for basic package etc. The movie channels are at times crap as Disney and Marvel have left their stable.

The question is if Rugby departs, they will lose more subscribers which makes it imperative for them to hold onto NRL and AFL.

So advantage Castle at the moment but it is a game of bluff.

I don't see how it is "advantage Castles".

The Optus package would be for digital rights, and they would probably sub-let the FTA rights like they did with the World Cup and SBS.

But I doubt they would be paying overs. The only serious competition is either Foxtel or one of the FTA channels - the latter all struggling and the former pissed off.

The sad truth is that Rugby is a product that is only seriously watched in two states, and has deteriorated in quality because the local teams are useless.

Rugby League agents are signing up the good junior talent before they get a chance to play club Rugby and this is a problem that is going to require some "mongrel" to fix.

Pull out of that God aweful Super Rugby competition and use the money saved to keep junior talent and to boost up domestic comps.

Plus pulling out would stick it up the smart arses from NZ and SA who have us on the end of a string like a puppet with Super Rugby.

Bledisloe Shield back to 3 match series every three years - overexposed at the moment and people are yawning watching the predictable thrashing.

I disagree with you partially PP but first I do agree with you for the state of Rugby at the moment

It is a mess, the Australian clubs are a joke. They are 0/6 against o/s sides so far this year with the only wins against fellow Australian clubs. However they do have a good chance to break the o/s duck this weekend.

The Wallabies are a mess and probably will finish below 50% win record again.

Now the positives. The reason why Castle has an advantage is the grassroots. Club Rugby is solid and probably because ARU did not run it. There is a hard core fan base out there for it but not Super Rugby.

By putting Club Rugby, Super Rugby and Wallabies games together in a package, it is more appealing for a subscription service that is trying to hold or expand.

The question is if Castle can negotiate a Free to air game even in the lesser channels, it will have a positive impact in the future. Not sure how long it will take though.

Foxtel is losing subscribers every month. That is why it is hard to cancel your Foxtel. Try it one day and you will get some of the best offers in the world if you can get through.

Last time I rang upto cancel they offered HD Movies, Sport with Basic etc for less than $50.

Foxtel canít afford to lose subscribers. Rugby needs a big deal. It will be an interesting few months ahead.

News Corp article on the state of Rugby in Australia. Funny no mention of how they made a bid to still broadcast it for the future and rejection of their bid. The mind games are on.
