Two-year-old Lucky Elmo will be having his 20th start at Randwick on Saturday. Trainer Bindi Cheers says there no reason why Lucky Elmo won't have 300 starts during his career

She is right, provided he is sound and healthy why shouldn't he have 300 runs in his career ?

Bindi had a good horse sometime back that had heaps of runs up here in Brisbane.

I might be wrong but I think that is right.

There are plenty of ways to skin a cat, and racing them and not working them is one, anybody remember a horse called Picnic in the Park.

Yes mate, but not just north Qld,

The whole of queensland from memory, and maybe even NSW, somebody with a better memory then myself can elaborate.

The point being he never used to work the horse, just race him, some times 3 times in the one day  :o

For some people maybe, but the point I am making, is there are a lot of different ways to train a horse, and not one method is right or wrong.

If I had the option to either race my horses every week, or gallop them hard 3 times a week ..... then I would select the first.

It is my belief that guenuine top flight finishing speed is diminished by either a lot of hard training or lots of and hard racing. But than only 1 in a thousand horses has top class finishing speed.

If you over race a horse or over train them, you will in my opinion dull their finishing speed.

This is however unquantifiable, it maybe that the siad horse is just plain slow.

Quadri  had 7 runs in jan 03 and quite often had 5 or 6 runs a month.
in one prep he had 97 runs and on his 85th start in on that prep won a race in town.

No doubt in my mind this is true.  emthup
Horses trained or raced hard will run over further distance but not have the same speed - no surprise there!
The key is knowing the horse you are dealing with and which method it is best suited to.
Time and again you will see sprinters trained and placed like middle distance horses/stayers and underperform and vice versa.
If Bindi picks /has the right horses in her stable what she does will work as has been proven.
