Perth jockey William Pike secures potential Melbourne Cup ride

Champion Perth hoop William Pike has committed to ride Schabau this spring, including in the Melbourne Cup should he gain a start.

The Robert Hickmott-trained import emerged onto the Australian scene with three straight wins at Flemington in early 2019. He went to the paddock with huge spring ambitions that year before injuring a tendon just days into his spell.

Schabau races in the colours of WA owner Geoff Evans of Distinct Racing, with former MRC chairman Mike Symons, Adelaide Crows chairman Rob Chapman, and prominent bloodstock agent Suman Hedge - who sourced the horse from Germany - also among the ownership group.

Currently a $34 shot in TAB's all-in market, it would seem Schabau still has some work to do before he is one of the 24 horses to line up at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November.

But that work, on raceday at least, will be done with Pike in tow, as revealed by WA racing journo Julio Santarelli on Thursday.

Earlier this week, it emerged Pike is planning on basing himself in Melbourne for a period of the spring.
