Newmarket start confirmed for Northern Meteor
Clinton Payne
Tuesday, 3 March 2009

A start in Saturday’s $1 million Group I Newmarket Handicap (1200m) has been confirmed after the gun colt disappointed in a gallop at Flemington this morning.

Waterhouse discussed Northern Meteor’s immediate options after the star three-year-old appeared “lost” in his morning workout according jockey Blake Shinn.

“Blake said it wasn’t real focussed and explosive work which is what’s needed going into a very tough Newmarket,” Waterhouse’s Racing Manager Robyn Hartney said.

“It was the same when he went to Caulfield last week.

“Blake did say things might have been different if he was galloping with a mate but he will need to be right at the top of his game this weekend.”

Following the work Waterhouse contacted Gooree’s representative Andrew Baddock who wants to push on with the original plans for the colt to resume in Victoria’s feature sprint this weekend.

“Andrew has said the horse will start in the Newmarket so it is all systems go.”

As a spring three-year-old Northern Meteor took out the Group I Coolmore Ascot Vale Stakes (1200m) at his first start down the Flemington straight and is currently the $7 equal second favourite for the Newmarket Handicap.

Had earmarked him as my early pick this weekend, but the following report doesn't sound great - that's two bits of work that have been substandard.  Take it on face value, or is there trickery afoot?

This horse still has a lot to prove, not saying it won't be a champ but some of the stuff mention last year was over the top or at leats pre-mature.

Idon't think so T, he went from a Maiden to a G1 in his 1st
Prep also won A g1 at his 5th start.
I Think he deserved & earnt the wraps etc.

Fair enough mate,
I just look at it's group one win against, really, no one but to be fair you can only beat what's running against you, but on that & it's other starts i don't rate it any higher right than something like Desuetude, If you go back and look at Meteors run on the 27/08/08 you can tell if it wants to win it could but it doesn't, it's win on the 18/10/08 is impressive until you take into account the heavy leader bias that day.

But don't get me wrong i'm not saying it's not a good horse far fro it in fact, certainy me saying this adds to it's chances of winning on the W/E.

Secret Flyer is certainly the best supported over the past 2-3 days.

Still think there's something fishy with Northern Meteor:  all those valid points against him made above, plus two ordinary bits of work, and he remains solid fav / eq fav...need someone on course Sat. to tell us how TW's odds are compared to the rest of the ring.

that will only confuse you BH,if tw is unders, you want to lay the horse,if he has him overs you want to back it

You're right Judge.  I'll probably take a couple of roughies for fun, go wide in the quaddie, and move on.

Time Thief. Led in Apache Cat's win: He and Tesbury Jack went so fast in front, running 57.4 for the first 1,000m - Miss Andretti's track record is 57.22 and the 3yo track record is 57.47 (Al Mandon carrying 2.5 less than Time Thief carried).

Yet he was still in it at the 200m, and only popped 75m out (coming 3rd).  I know closing times are more important, but I reckon he's going great, is a first class and consistent 3yo, and with 51.5 here (down 4kg) and hopefully getting a little cover from 11, will do me at $14+.

closing times aren't always more important,a lot of times a horse running 12 for his last 200 is a better run than a horse running 11 for his last 200 in the same race

no smoke up my ass but i did give everyone swiss ace in the oakleigh plate thread, i said you could run it 10 times for 10 different results and this is even harder,
no reason to get off swiss ace,  but i really think the danger is Aichi at 41-1.

Typhoon Zed has to be a chance in a tough race. 2 decent eachway collects so far this campaign, and no reason he won't be there at the business end again.

It seems that the last horse to win the Newmarket first up  was in 1917.
Now that was a few years ago  :unsu

“I thought he ran really well, this was a tough race and he’s not fit yet,” Blake Shinn, rider of Northern Meteor (4th).

What's he entered for next?

The question is, why wasn't he fit? That's a disgrace, did they say he wasn't fit before the race? Of course not
