Wayne Hawkes: 'Speed maps are a crock of sh*t'

Trainer Wayne Hawkes is not often backward in coming forward and on Tuesday it was speed maps that were in his sights during his weekly 'Wayne's World' segment on RSN with Gareth Hall.

Hawkes was asked about his opinion on restrictions being placed on jockey agents, with NSW already banning them from betting in races featuring a rider they manage - a rule Victoria is considering implementing.

The conversation then shifted to the use of speed maps and it's fair to say Hawkes doesn't think they should carry too much weight when it comes to how a jockey rides in a race.

"If everyone threw the speed maps out the window, we'd all be better off because speed maps are a crock of sh*t. That's what they are," Hawkes said.

"They truly are. Ride the horse. I know there would be agents now listening and jockeys listening, but you know what, you do your heads in too much over this sort of stuff."

"Ride your horse for where your horse needs to be and you'd be so much better off I reckon."

"If you ride every horse how it feels in the run and everything like that, you have just a little bit of an overview of what's it all about."

Hawkes said the use of speed maps, including by jockey agents and stewards, was overcomplicating racing.

"The biggest problem jockey's face is a trainer can have a speed map, an owner can have a speed map, the jockey's manager gives them a speed map and then the stewards' just come in - and Victoria to be fair are very good, NSW are a bit painful with this - they want to chime in three-deep and give their speed map of what they think."

"(There's) too many speed maps and you know what, we are overcomplicating it all."

Racing Australia earlier this year introduced a rule limiting who can provide jockeys with tactical riding instructions.

Under AR120, riders are no longer be able to receive, directly or indirectly, instructions about the running or riding of their mount from anyone other than the trainer (or authorised agent) or an owner of the horse.

Previously, some jockeys had engaged the services of form analysts to receive speed maps.

A lot of people don't like Wayne but I reckon he is one of the real characters of racing.

Doesn't mind saying what he thinks.

Much more interesting than the sterile woke stuff that seems to be predominate in modern society.

He’s spot on. I’ve seen too many instances of jocks supposedly following “the right horse” only to be left looking like a goose

I agree with Wayne Hawkes.
It played out in the Winter Final last Sat.
The jock on the "put in, take out" fav. Dice Roll was clearly waiting for the pace horse Odeon to kick up on his inside.
Someone should have told him and all the "smart" punters that Simon Zahra in an interview earlier in the day said "we are going to try different tactics on Odeon :o

This thread was before I joined the forum
Sad reminder about the racing industry to see the horse War Ends featuring on the opening pages.
War Ends is the horse getting his head kicked because it was laying outside the "kill box" at Merramist.

A decent sort of a horse who surely deserved a lot better to be sent to that shit-hole.

Good picking Wily you must have a lucky pin to stab this never a chance at Grafton not a bob for it $151  last time and ran accordingly very lack lustre  ride imo never extended  ....... today a different horse and jockey also down a grade and Moree is well below Grafton .. follow the money ...you would think stewards would ask connections what inspired the betting move and the substantial improvement today compared to its last run.....you know anyfing you want to tell us.

Giddy Up

Yes mate. It’s one thing to race “In restricted rom” but it’s another to put yourself in restricted room and not try and get out of it when it is vey easy to do so 😆😆

Just on that, from yesterday’s race the beaten favourite fits right into that category and goes into my black book 🤫
